PREPOSITIONS • A word that is used to link or provide relationship between noun or pronoun and other words (verb or adjective) in the sentence thus makes the sentence complete. Types: 1. Preposition of Time • Preposition that allows you to discuss a specific time period. • In – periods of time, seasons or months, years or decades or centuries • On – dates and named days of the week • At – specific times on the clock or points of time in the day • By – with specified end time Examples: • My birthday falls in January. • My vacation ends on Monday. • It gets cold at night. • We need to be there by noon. 2. Preposition of Place • Preposition that describes the position of a person or thing in relation to another person or thing. • In – within, inside the edges • On – surfaces • At – specific places, points in space, public places, shops, addresses, events • By – next to something, beside, near Examples: • She left it in the top drawer. • The books are on the table. • I had a coffee at Helen’s house. • They live by the school. Preposition of Direction • Preposition that shows movement from one place to another place. • To – describes movement used to indicate a destination or direction • Towards – describes movement in the direction of something • Through – describes movement in one side out of the other of something • Across – describes movement from one side to the other side of something • Into – describes movement to an enclosed space; movement resulting in physical contact • Onto – describes movement to the top surface of something • Over – describes movement above and across the top or top surface of something Examples: • We went to London last week. • She pushed her face towards him. • The baseball went through the window. • I ran across the street. • I walked quickly into the room. • I slipped as I stepped onto the platform. • He jumped over the wall.
