Appendix A
Expansion diagram
for several types of pipe
All matter expands when warmed up and contracts when cooled down.
Especially for heating pipes which, owing to thermostat control, are
constantly undergoing temperature changes, this is of special significance.
By the use of the correct pipe supports which have the possibility to swing
or slide, high tension forces are eliminated.
TABLE 6.

BEAM AND COLUMN SAFE WORKING LOADS
y BEAM LOADS
y The following Table 8 contains safe working loads for Binder Channels when used as a simply supported beam with a
uniformly distributed load applied to the channel.
y The loads are calculated using a Safe Working Stress of 172 MPA (N/mm²).
y Should the load be a Point Load in the centre of the beam, the maximum load is multiplied by 0.50 and deflection by 0.80.
y Where moderate deflections can be tolerated i.e. deflection equal to 1/180 of the span, the reduced load is shown. Where
maximum loads do not induce a deflection in excess of 1/180 of the span, the reduced load is not required.
y Where virtually no deflection can be tolerated i.e. deflection equal to 1/360 of the span, the reduced load is shown. Where
maximum loads do not induce a deflection in excess of 1/360 of the span, the reduced load is not required.
y COLUMN LOADS
y Maximum Column Loads are given assuming ends are pinned. i.e. free length is unsupported. Should the load be
eccentric, refer to Binder Engineering for advice.

The BE105 Saddle Guide is manufactured with a clearance
gap around the pipe to allow for free movement of the pipe.
The BE106 is manufactured with a tight fit around the pipe
and a pull down to clamp the pipe.
For Copper Tube the saddle is normally supplied plastic
coated to give a barrier between the copper and steel. A
Polypropolene strip can be supplied on request for the
copper tube to sit on thus isolating the copper from the
supporting steelwork.
Nuts and bolts can be supplied with the saddles on request.
Standard Saddle Material - Carbon Steel.

Inorganic Insulation Block
BE117
PU-block:
Polyurethane Hard Foam, with closed cells.
Density: 80 kp/m3
cold rushing strength: 7 kgs/cm2
fire classification: B 2 (acc. to DIN 4102)
wrapped in aluminium foil, smooth surface
interlocking joint
temperature resistance: from -50oC to +110oC
thermal conductivity: 0,030 W/mK
insulation thickness: 20, 30, 40 and 50mm
length of the block: 100 and 250mm
other sizes upon request
Insulation Clamps can be supplied with
or without DMG sound insulation lining.
Examples of Application:
y to avoid thermal conduction through the pipe support carrying
refrigeration pipes.
y to avoid the formation of condensation on the clamp (also on
cold water pipes.)
y as load bearing block in the clamp when compressible
insulation is being used.
y available to suit all sizes of pipe and tube with insulation
thickness from 20mm to 100mm.
Mounting Instructions:
The load bearing blocks should match the insulation thickness. The
joints should be sealed to form a vapour seal, e.g. by gluing or with
self-adhesive tapes. To achieve a vapour seal, it is usually required
to have the self-adhesive tapes overlapping 50mm on each side.
For these cases it is advisable to use the 250mm long blocks.
For heavier pipes of approx. 125mm and upwards it is advisable to
use load bearing sleeves or semi-sleeves made of metal between
the block and the clamp.

OF LEAK PROOF PLUGS
Available Units
Several bodies and cores can be supplied to be impervious to various
liquids and gases.
A Brass body with a NORDEL Core for all water based applications.
A Stainless Steel or brass body with a NEOPRENE Core for HydroCarbon applications.
A Stainless Steel Body with NORDEL or NEOPRENE Core for Food and
Process Applications.
Twinlok Test Plug
Applications
Safety
This unique core design ensured efficient sealing. No leakage or jetting
on withdrawal of instrument probes.
Twinlok Test Plug Applications
1) Heating Systems
a) Static Pressure Measurement.
b) Temperature Measurement.
c) Differential Pressure Measurement.
a) This applies to pump pressures, tank head pressures and branch
line pressures up to 3500 Kpa.
b) Feeder line temperature i.e. boiler supply temperature (Flow and
Return), Branch line (F & R) Temperature difference across
heating coils or fan/coil units. Temperature not exceeding
135oC.
c) Differential pressure for determining water flow rates. These are
used as access points on Orifice Plates, Heating Coils, Double
Regulating valves. Used in conjunction with a Mercury
Manometer(inclined or vertical) Differential pressure gauge or
Perfector Flow Computer.
When to use the Twinlok Test Plug
The principle of the Twinlok Test Plug is to provide a Self Sealing access
point in live liquid or gas pipes so that pressure and temperature
measurements may be made within the pipe. It replaces the old method
of fixing a permanent instrument in the pipework whether it be for
temperature or pressure measurement. Max. Pressure 3500 Kpa, Max.
Temperature 130oC.
Advantages
Cost
On a straightforward cost comparison the Test Plug replaces a pressure
gauge and gauge cock. The provision of a line fixing has to be provided
in both cases. The gauge cock is generally more expensive than the Test
Plug and even a very cheap gauge would be more expensive than a single
Test Plug.
So that one may measure temperature at the same point a cheap
Thermometer could be permanently installed. This would mean two
insertions in the pipe with a greater chance of leakage. The Test Plug
provides a single entry point.
Location of Test Plugs related to above
a) Immediately either side of the pump. On many centrifugal
pumps a ¼” BSP tapping is available on the input and output. At
any convenient point upstream and downstream of the pump. In
the pipeline at the lowest feeding point from the tank. At the feed
and end points of the branch line or wherever required. The point
of a fan/coil unit could be used.
b) At any convenient point where design information is required or
where commissioning information is necessary for balancing the
heating system i.e. at the same points where the pressure
readings are taken. Advantage:- Pressure and Temperature
readings at one point. Two fixed instruments normally required
(T & P).
c) When it is necessary to determine water flow rates or pressure
differentials across heating coils etc, the Test Plug gives
immediate access for any type of differential measuring device.
Orifice Plate:
Stainless Steel Orifice Plate to BS 1042 mounted in a
polypropelene on metal carrier complete with corner tappings
which are connected to two Test Plugs from which can be taken
the H.P. & L.P. pressure readings.
Heating Coils:
Test Plugs on the supply and return headers help to provide
differential pressure readings. Knowing the coil resistance the flow
can be calculated.
Double Regulating Valves:
This is a common method of measuring flow rates when using
the calibrated valve orifice and differential pressure across the
orifice as a means of obtaining volumetric flow rates. A test plug
is screwed into each of the ¼” BSP tappings either side of the
valve and differential pressure readings taken. The flow rate is
calculated from the valve characteristic curves supplied.
Accuracy
By using the Pressure Gauge Adaptor Probe a much higher grade
instrument may be used in an infinite number of positions. If a low grade
instrument is selected it can be used to greater accuracy because of the
common datum of measurement. This also applies to temperature
measurement.
When using the temperature gauge with a pocket inserted in the line,
inaccuracies occur due to bad contact between the temperature sensor
and the liquid in the pipe, i.e. the pocket is the intermediate conductor.
This does not occur when using a Test Plug as the sensor is in intimate
contact with the liquid to be measured, this also applies to gases.
Location
The positioning of Test Plugs in the line is often very simple, particularly
where isolating or Double Regulating Valves are installed. Most of these
are fitted with ¼” B.S.P. tapped bosses upstream and downstream of the
valve into which can be screwed ¼” B.S.P.T. Test Plugs. In this position
they can be used for Measuring Pressure, (i.e. balancing the system when
cold) Temperature (i.e. checking system when hot MAX 135oC) & flow
measurement. (i.e. measuring pressure differential which is used in
conjunction with the valve characteristic to determine flow velocities and
hence volumetric flow). This measurement can be made with a Differential
Pressure Gauge, Manometer or Perfector Flow Computer.
Time Savings
Speed of operation is probably the greatest advantage of the Test Plug.
When using a pressure gauge and adaptor it is just a question of removing
the dust cap and pushing the adaptor through the plug. This gives an
instant line pressure reading. Withdraw the probe and replace dust cap.
Temperature readings are made in the same way.
No instruments are left in position to be damaged on purpose or by
accident.
This is an advantage in housing situations or district heating schemes
where instruments could be vandalised.
Whenever the pressure probe or temperature probe is pushed through
the Test Plug and withdrawn the wiping process automatically keeps the
probe and the internal parts of the core clean. When permanent
instruments are installed, a mineral deposit is built up around the sensor
thus blocking the cavity or reducing sensitivity. The ball type seating for
pressure measurement only can be held open due to solids in the seating.
2) Chilled Water System
The same principles apply to chilled water systems as to heating
systems except that greater accuracy is called for due to the small
percentage error allowable on the recorded temperature, which is
normally 7oC to 13oC. By using the Test Plug a larger number of
readings can be taken at low capital cost.
3) Dezincification
a) The Twinlok Test Plug is manufactured from a Dezincification
resistant Brass Alloy. This is particularly important in several
Australian States where the water quality causes rapid
deterioration of conventional Brass Leaching the zinc from the
alloy and causing brittle failure in a short period of time.
b) Tests have been conducted on the Twinlok by the Engineering
Research Station (PWD) Western Australia to A52345 - 1980 for
conformance of the Dezincification.
c) Engineering Research Station conducted Pressure Tests on the
Twinlok up to 8000 KPA for prolonged periods. AS1590 - 1982
requires pressures of 2000 KPA at 15 seconds which the
Twinlok greatly exceeded. Copies of Test Certificates are
available on request.
End Users
A large proportion of Test Plugs are sold to the Heating, Ventilating and
Air Conditioning industry for applications as described. The plug can also
be used for sampling liquids, semi-solids and gases in the Process, Food
and Petro-Chemical Industries. It can also be used for injecting in the
same way. Pump rates etc. can be checked by fitting either side i.e. suction
and discharge. There are many O.E.M. applications such as either side
of fan/coil units, chilled water coils, pumps, hydraulic lines and
compressors etc. Injecting oil or similar into gearboxes is just another
application.

Operating Procedure- Pressure and
Temperature Readings
1. The operator should wear protective clothing
i.e. gloves and goggles when using the plug in
high temperature lines or where any injurious
liquids or gases are contained.
2. Slowly remove the cap from the plug. If, while
doing, you feel or hear gas or liquids escaping
quickly retighten the cap. Determine at this
time if the plug has been used improperly and
if necessary replace the plug as soon as
possible.
3. Having determined that the plug is operating
correctly, remove the cap.
4. Select the appropriate probe for pressure and
temperature. Clean and lubricate the probe
with a small amount of silicone oil. Examine
the probe for any sharp burrs which could cut
the valves. Remove any burrs before using.
Do not use non-standard or damaged probes.
5. Pressure Probe Insertion:
A. Determine approximate pressure in pipeline
and select a gauge of suitable range complete
with Test Plug adaptor/probe.
B. Partially insert the lubricated pressure probe
into the test plug. If you are not sure of the
pressure behind the plug, be prepared to
quickly withdraw the probe before rupturing or
overpressuring the gauge. The plug, in its
static state and without a cap, can easily
withstand over 500 psig without leaking. Do
not assume that, since the plug is not leaking,

that it is safe to quickly and fully insert a lowrange gauge. If you guess wrong, the
pressure gauge could explode in your hand.
When the pressure gauge needle stops
moving up-scale, then fully insert the probe
and read the pressure.
Do not leave the probe in the plug any longer
than necessary. Always screw the
adaptor/probe union to the top of the Test Plug
to prevent the internal pressure from ejecting
the instrument and probe.
When removing the probe, do not place your
face near the plug. The plug should not leak
when you remove the probe, but always
observe safety precautions.
As soon as the probe is removed, replace the
cap.
Temperature Probe Insertion:
Temperature probe insertion is similar to
pressure probe insertion with the exception
that the operator should always first determine
the pressure behind the plug before insertion
of the temperature probe. This establishes
that the plug is operating within its
specification limits. After pressure has been
determined, follow the steps as outlined in
items 5A to 5F.
Using a test plug which has been installed
and unused for several years.
Follow all operating procedures shown above.

Airflow Test Set - Type
D220
DESCRIPTION
Air Flow Portable Test Set, incorporates a variable angle inclined manometer. The device can
be precisely set to cover a pressure range of 0 to 2500 Pa with a total of four manometer positions.
Air Velocities are displayed on direct reading scales, taking differential pressure from a pitotstatic tube, which is normally provided, clipped within the case. A pressure scale is included for
measurement of static and differential pressures, with a simple multiplication factor applied for
different angles of incline.
Features include easy-zero for different slopes due to adjustable scales, a machined joint with
O-Ring spindle which ensures positive and leakproof changes from one position to another.
Overpressure chambers help reduce liquid loss on accidental overpressurisation.
‘Lifetime’ calibration is assured since there can be no sag or distortion of the precision bore
column in the solid perspex block, and also because the relationship between panel and spirit bubble
is permanent.
The air test set comes complete with a pitot static tube, a T-piece and 2 x 6 metres flexible
tubing, with all equipment contained in a wooden carrying case.
PITOT STATIC TUBE
The pitot static tubes are manufactured in stainless steel and come in sizes from
0.30 to 4.0 metres long. The nose is ellipsoidal in shape which ensures that slight nonalignments within the duct have a minimum effect on accuracy of readings. A direction
pointer indicates that the pitot tube is correctly inserted within the ductwork. Temperatures
up to 800°C for short periods and 700°C for extended use can be admirably withstood.
The above properties of the pitot static tube combined with the versatility of the
variable slope inclined test set provide an ideal method for measuring air and gas flows
from ducted air in the building services industry to flue gases in general industry.

To select appropriate flowmeter: DIVIDE required flow by — bar absolute)
(Note: This method is accurate to 5% for temperature -10 - 0 - +40°C. It gives flows “at reference conditions”,
such as NI/min or SCFM, i.e. the volume the compressed air or gas would occupy under atmospheric pressure,
which is normally of most interest to users.)
