Students Handbook 2022–23 | 9 ACADEMIC INFORMATION National Education Policy (NEP) T he National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), which was approved by the Union Cabinet of India on 29 July 2020, outlines the vision of India’s new education system. The Karnataka government has implemented the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in undergraduate colleges from the academic year 2021–2022, making it the first state in India to do so. The National Education Policy 2020 aims at equipping students with knowledge, skills, values, leadership qualities and initiates them for lifelong learning. It is in tune with the global education development agenda reflected in the Goal 4 (SDG4) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by India in 2015, which seeks to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” by 2030. The foundational principles of NEP 2020 are Access, Equity, Quality, Affordability and Accountability. The Policy believes that the education system should develop good human beings with rational thinking, compassion, empathy, courage, resilience, scientific temper, creativity and ethical values. It aims to recognise, identify and strengthen the unique capabilities of each student, promoting holistic development in both academic and non-academic spheres. Adhering to the guidelines issued by the Government of Karnataka and Bengaluru City University, Jyoti Nivas College Autonomous has implemented NEP 2020 from the academic year 2021–2022. As per the NEP, the duration and structure of the Degree Programmes have been modified and an Undergraduate degree is structured for 3 or 4 years with multiple exit options. Students are eligible to obtain a certificate after one year of study, a diploma after two years of study and a Bachelor’s degree after three years of study. Four years of study will lead to a Honour’s degree in the chosen major subject. NEP is based on the Choice Based Credit System(CBCS). The accumulated credits are digitally stored in the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC). The Karnataka State Higher Education Council has suggested a model curriculum framework for implementing the NEP to enable a significant shift in the contemporary undergraduate programme. It has been designed 10 | Jyoti Nivas College Autonomous on the outcome based education approach. The current programmes have been modified and replaced with multidisciplinary and holistic education with multiple entry and exit options. Categories of Courses Under NEP Language course encourage fresh and free thinking and clarity of expression in thought and speech. It forms as a foundation for learning other courses. It helps in fluent communication. In addition to English, a candidate shall opt for any of the languages studied at the Pre-University or equivalent level. Ability enhancement courses are the generic skill courses which are basic and needed all to pursue any career. These courses ensure progression across careers. They enable students to develop a deeper sense of commitment to oneself and to the society and nation at large. Skill Enhancement courses are to promote skills pertaining to a particular field of study. The purpose of these courses is to provide students lifeskills in hands-on mode so as to increase their employability or encourage self-employment. The objective is to integrate in a holistic manner general education with discipline related skills. A major discipline is the field in which a student focuses during the course of her degree. These courses are to be taught uniformly across all universities with minimum deviation. The purpose of fixing core courses is to ensure that all the institutions follow a minimum common curriculum so that each institution adheres to a common minimum standard which makes credit transfer and mobility of students easier. Elective course can be chosen from a pool of courses and which may be specific or specialized or advanced or supportive to the discipline/subject of study or which provides extended scope or enables an exposure to some other discipline subject/domain or which nurtures the candidate’s proficiency/skill. Elective courses offered under the main discipline are referred to as Discipline Specific Electives. These courses provide more depth within the discipline itself or within a component of the discipline and provide advanced knowledge and expertise in an area of the discipline. The institutions have freedom to have their own courses based on their expertise, Students Handbook 2022–23 | 11 specialization, requirements, scope and need. The elective courses may be of interdisciplinary nature. A Minor Discipline is a secondary specialization that one may choose to pursue in addition to a Major Discipline. They may be related areas of studies or two distinct areas of studies which are not interrelated at all. Open or Generic Elective Courses are courses chosen from an unrelated discipline/ subject, with an intention to seek exposure beyond discipline/s of choice. The purpose of these is to offer the students the option to explore disciplines of interest beyond the choices they make in core and discipline specific elective courses. Project work is a special course involving application of knowledge in solving / analyzing / exploring a real life situation / difficult problem or data analysis. Project Work has the intention to provide research competencies at undergraduate level. It enables the acquisition of special advanced knowledge through support study/a project work. To provide a dynamic, innovative, competitive, flexible and student-friendly learning environment, Credit Based System was introduced from the academic year 2009–2010. This system provides the students with a wider choice of interdisciplinary courses and instills in them a greater sense of belonging and involvement; it gives them an opportunity to earn extra credits to enhance their academic experience. We strongly believe that higher education is effective and meaningful when the students are socially sensitized to cater to the needs of the people, in fighting against poverty, disease, illiteracy and ecological degradation.
