Proposed Thesis Title:
Crop Management (Plant Pathology).
Disease
Response,
Growth
and
Yield
in Tomato; As Affected by Transplant Date and Inoculation
with Bioagents
1
9(i) Specific objectives of the Research are:
a) Assess the Impact of Transplant Date and inoculation with biocontrol agents (solely and
synergistically) on the response of tomato to diseases
b) Determine the effect of treatments on the growth and yield of tomato
(ii)
Expected Contribution of the Research to Knowledge:
The study is expected to provide information on the suitability of sole and synergistic use of
transplant date and inoculation with Bacillus sp and Trichoderma sp for control of tomato
diseases. It will also provide information of the effect of Treatment in the quality of produce. The
Mechanism of action of biocontrol agents will be understood
10.
Methodology:
The research will be carried out at the Teaching and Research Farm of The Federal University of
Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State. The experimental materials will be Rio Grande variety
of Tomato Seed. The Seeds will be surface sterilized in Sodium hypochlorite and 70% alcohol
before planting. Planting the nursery will be done in small nursery bag half filled with nutrient
rich top soil. Soil for raising the seedling will also be sterilized using the steam heat method. Two
bioagents control will be used, Bacillus sp and Trichoderma sp. Which will be isolated from
garden soil
The biocontrol agents will be grown in artificial medium (NA and PDA), Sub-culturing will be
done to obtain sole culture of each organism. Identification will be done through visual
observation, Microscopy and Molecular Analysis.
The experimental design to be used is 3x2 factorial experimental design in plastic pots
Factor A = Transplant Date Factor B = Bioagents
Twelve treatment will be evaluated and each will be replicated thrice, and the treatments will be
laid out in a Completely Randomized Design. Data will be collected on Number of Leaves, Plant
Height, Number of Branches, Disease Incidence, Disease Severity (using appropriate rating
2
scale), Yield quality and Quantity.
Data collected will be subject to analysis of Variance (Anova) using MINITAB software
Significant means will be separated using Turkey’s Test and 5% level of probability.
