Product Overview
ZXR10 8900 series switch is an Ethernet routing switch developed
by ZTE Corporation that is applicable to the backbone layer or convergence layer of MAN. It serves as backbone/convergence layer
switch within corporate and campus network.
ZXR10 8900 series switch provides the interfaces including fast
Ethernet, gigabit Ethernet and 10 gigabit. It supports L2/L3 wirespeed forwarding of all ports, therefore, it satisfies the increasing
requirements for bandwidth. ZXR10 8900 series switch supports
multiple uni-cast and multi-cast protocols.
Services carried by data network increase rapidly with the development of network. It requires higher QoS and better security for
network equipment. ZXR10 8900 series switch provides policies
and resources that are related to QoS and ACL, assuring system
security.
ZXR10 8900 series switch provides hot-backup function in power
module and control & switching module, therefore, it is applicable
to large-capacity network with high reliability.
ZXR10 8900 series switch has the following characteristics:

Working Principle
ZXR10 8900 series switch is a large-capacity rack and mountable
Ethernet switch that implements wire-speed Layer2/3 switching
through two-level hardware switching. Level 1 switching is between ports of line interface cards; level 2 switching between line
interface cards is implemented through control switching board.
ZXR10 8900 series switch hardware design complies with system
modulization principle that includes the following four modules:

Switching module

Packet processing and interface module

Power supply module
Control Module
This module consists of main processor and external functional
chips that implement application processing in the system. It
also provides various operational interfaces including serial interface and Ethernet interface to perform data operation and maintenance.
Switching Module
It provides multiplex high-speed bi-directional serial interface to
implement wire-speed data switch between line interface cards.
Packet Processing
and Interface
Module
Interface module is the external interface of ZXR10 8900 series
switch. It provides one or multiple physical ports. Different line
interface cards implement access of different rates and types.
Power Supply
Module
It adopts 220V AC power supply or –48V DC power supply. It also
provides power for other parts of the system.
ZXR10 8912/8908/8905 system principle is shown in Figure 1.

Hardware Structure
ZXR10 8900 series switch system consists of chassis, power supply
plug-in box, board, fan plug-in box and backplane. System adopts

international standard 19-inch plug-in box that can be laid-out
solely or can be fixed in standard chassis.

ZXR10 8912 has 14 plug-in slots. Two slots are for control and
switching boards, and twelve slots are for line interface cards.
�
ZXR10 8908 has 10 plug-in slots. Two slots are for control and
switching boards and eight slots are for line interface cards.
�
ZXR10 8905 has 7 plug-in slots. Two slots are for control and
switching boards and five slots are for line interface cards.
�
ZXR10 8902 has 3 plug-in slots. One slot is for control and
switching board. Two slots are for line interface cards.
Control and switching board is the system core that implements
switching, protocol processing, system configuration management
and interface network management. It performs 1+1 redundant
configuration.
Line interface card performs message processing that includes forwarding, discarding, and reporting (to implement wire-speed forwarding of service flow) functions. ZXR10 8900 series switch supports line interface cards of multiple categories and port density.

ZXR10 8912, ZXR10 8908 and ZXR10 8905 have the same hardware structure with control/switching board and various line interface cards can be shared.
Cards of types “RS-89S1-4XGE-XFP” and “RS-89S2-4XGE-XFP”
are not supported on ZXR10 8902. Other cards can be shared on
ZXR10 8912, ZXR10 8908, ZXR10 8905 and ZXR10 8902.

MCS is the core of ZXR10 8900 series switch, implementing the
functions of control module and switching module.
For ZXR10 8900 series switch, MCS card provides master/slave
switchover function. It also performs 1+1 redundant configuration.

Function
Front Panel
RS-89H3-48GE-SFP card improves L2/3 functions based on
RS-89S2-48GE-SFP card, shows large entry size and provides
MPLS function. It can provide 48 gigabit Ethernet optical interfaces and implement L2-L7 packet processing to meet complicated
applications in actual networking.

RS-89M1-DPI is a 10G card, used to perform deep packet inspection, application layer data analysis and state-based data analysis.
It can accurately identify various flows in network and perform occupied bandwidth per flow.

Considering the practical requirements of core switch, ZXR10
8912/8908/8905 employs hot-backup design for power supply
part. It also provides –48V DC power supply and 220V AC power
supply. DC power supply adopts 1+1 backup mode. Power is
supplied by two groups of –48V DC simultaneously. On the other
hand AC power supply adopts 2+1 backup mode that enhances
the reliability of power supply system.
Power supply system adopts modularization design, in which
power supply types and number of modules are selected according
to the requirements.

8902 switch employs hot-backup design in power supply part. It
also provides –48V DC power supply and 220V AC power supply.
DC power supply and AC power supply adopt 1+1 backup mode.
Power is supplied by two groups simultaneously that enhances
the reliability of power supply system. Switch and power wires
are on the front end of the plug-in box.
Power supply system adopts modularization design, in which
power supply types and number of modules can be selected
according to the requirements. Front panel view of DC power
supply module is showed in Figure 77.

Fan Plug-in Box Overview
ZXR10 8900 series switch adopts left side in draft heat dissipation
mode. This mode is adapted at the left side of front view in the
chassis. Multiple fans are used to draft the air from inside the device. There is an air inlet that lies at the right side of the chassis,
due to which the heat flows from right to left. Fan inside the device absorbs the air from outside and exchanges it with the heat
generated from single board and the power board of the device.
Major heating chips adopts aluminum radiator. Air-filter is set at
the inlet that facilitates the maintenance and cleaning of chassis.
Air-filter can be disassembled from the back of chassis.
