Practice Set Worksheet Making Inferences NOW I KNOW | A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO READING Name: Date & Time: ______________ Program: 1st year – BSA Score: ____________________ Activity 8.1 Going back to your lesson from the textbook, you learned that inferring is the ability to understand, identify, surmise, or derive something from graphics or passages where you figure out what is not directly expressed. This means that you can deduce, opine or draw conclusions based on your analyses and experiences as you study the clues you find in the material. Directions: Below are selected passages/quotations that are worthwhile to understand. Write your opinion or conclusion about each of the passages. 1. Many individuals have shining qualities like uncut diamonds beneath a rough exterior. By: Juveral In this statement, the author stated that many individuals have shining qualities. As for my understanding, having shining qualities means having an admirable character and skills. The statement also added, “uncut diamond beneath a rough exterior.” An uncut diamond is a diamond that are typically unpolished and unshaped. If I combine this Idea, I can conclude that the author wanted to tell us that we should not judge a person immediately, by just his or her appearance. We don’t know what’s within them. Everybody is special and skilled in their way, and everyone is capable of shining just like a diamond. 2. It is never safe to look into the future with eyes of fear. By: Edward Harriman I decoded the statement using the three phrases, first is “never safe” simply means it can cause us harm. Next is “to look in the future” or foreseeing the future. Then we have the “eyes of fear” which also means being afraid. Putting all this together, I can conclude that having constant fear of the thing that yet to come will not bring much good for us. It feeds stagnation and keeps us from taking advantages of opportunities. Life is already hard, so let’s not make it more harder, we should learn to live our lives in the present without the fear holding us back. 1 Practice Set Worksheet Making Inferences NOW I KNOW | A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO READING 3. You cannot push anyone up the ladder unless he be willing to climb himself. By: Edward Harriman People tend to be very stubborn. If we consider an example like that someone is having a problem that they won’t accept, they won’t take it from you that they need to do something unless they decide so. You can’t help someone if they don’t want help, because if they don’t want help they’ll do everything they can to block it out. Likewise if they don’t want to climb the ladder, they’ll try to resist everything that tells them to climb it. So I think it’s a very true statement that you can’t force people to do something unless they decide they are willing to do it. 4. A man is too apt to forget that in this world he cannot have everything; a choice is all that is left him. By: H. Matthews This quote implies that life does not always go as we planned, in life you do not really know where a road will lead you until you take it. There are no guarantees. There are too many possible outcomes, which your really cannot control. The only thing you have power over is the decisions that you will make, and how you would act and react to different situations. If we choose to have it, then we should work for it. In conclusion, we are the product of our choices. 5. Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere. By: Chinese Proverb Learning is a treasure as it can never be stolen from us and wherever we wgo we will always bring the wisdom that we have. It is like a weapon that enables us to fight and stand against all odds. 6. Today, see if you can stretch your heart and expand your love so that it touches not only those to whom you can give easily, but also those who need it much. By: Daphne Rose Kingma We all have different experiences in life. One thing I can say is that, living is not all sunshine and rainbows at some point in our lives we have gone through many storms or are going through one and in that very moment having someone to lean on is very important . Spreading positivity can make a great change for some people who we might not know but needed it very much. 2 Practice Set Worksheet Making Inferences NOW I KNOW | A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO READING 7. Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. By: Ralph Waldo Emerson We are the author of our own stories. We are the ones who are living our lives and finding the meaning in it. Therefore, we should not just follow everyone or anyone, we should instead set things for ourselves and see how they are working for us. Trying to discover the world on with our own eyes will help us learn more and grow more. 8. Experience is not what happens to you; it’s what you do with what happens to you. By: Aldous Huxley With this quote, we can imply that experience is not just the moment when something happens to someone but rather includes the lessons that the person learns as a result of those moments. Experience is a continuous process and not just a one-time event. 9. The tragedy of life does not lie in not reaching your goal but the tragedy lies in having no goal to reach. It is not a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream. It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no star to reach for. By: Benjamin Elijah Mays This statement simply states that having no dreams is not living at all. Having that “someday” is necessary to keep you moving in life. 10. A person who has no fire in his heart cannot warm others. By: Anonymous When you, firsthand, don’t know how to lit a fire, then you won’t be able to teach someone how to start a fire either. It is worth noting that everything must start from within. You must know to value who you are in order to help others value themselves. This might sound easy to say but the process is really hard to do, it is very challenging but it is not impossible. 3 Practice Set Worksheet Making Inferences NOW I KNOW | A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO READING Name: Date & Time: ______________ Program: 1st year – BS in Accountancy Score: ____________________ Activity 8.2 Directions: Each pair of students shall bring to class a picture. We work hard to achieve victories -promotions, higher income, more recognition. But we don't often stop to evaluate the meaning behind this busyness, behind these victories -- we don't ask ourselves if these things that we focus on so intently are what really matter to us. In everything we do, we should begin with the end in mind. Start with a clear destination. That way, we can make sure the steps we’re taking are in the right direction. Our self-awareness empowers us to shape our own lives. Being a manager is about optimizing for efficiency. But being a leader is about setting the right strategic vision for your organization, and asking, "What are we trying to accomplish?" Before we can start setting and achieving goals, we must be able to identify our values. This process may involve some re-scripting to be able to assert our own personal values. Re-scripting is recognizing ineffective scripts that have been written for you, and changing those scripts by proactively writing new ones that are built of your own values. It is important to identify our center. Whatever is at the center of our life will be the source of our security, guidance, wisdom, and power. Our center affects us fundamentally -- they determine our decisions, actions, and motivations. Therefore, we should strive to be principle-centered. We should identify the timeless, unchanging principles by which we must live our lives. This will give us the guidance that we need to align our behaviors with our beliefs and values.
