BAROQUE ERA (1600-1750) About the period The English word ‘Baroque’ comes from the Portuguese term barroco (‘a flawed pearl’). Baroque eventually came to describe an extravagant style of art characterized by curvy lines, gilt and gold. The era started around 1600s and ended in 1750s. Baroquism is a style of architecture, music, dance, painting, sculpture, poetry, and other arts that flourished in Europe from 1700- 1750. The era is a period of artistic style that used exaggerated emotion to produce drama, tension, exuberance and grandeur in sculpture, painting, architecture, literature, dance and music. Popular Artists Caravaggio Peter Paul Rubens Annibale Carracci Architecture Baroque architecture is known for its grandeur, dramatic forms, and intricate details. It features bold ornamentation, curvaceous lines, and elaborate facades. Elements like domes, columns, and decorative sculptures were used extensively. The style aimed to create a sense of awe and inspire emotions through its elaborate and theatrical designs. Furniture Baroque Furniture is known for its ornate and extravagant style, characterised by intricate carvings, luxurious materials like gilt and marble and curved forms. Common pieces include grandiose chairs, opulent tables adorned with rich fabrics and detailed designs. Gardens Baroque gardens are elaborate and meticulously designed landscapes that complemented the architectural style of the Baroque period. These gardens were characterized by their symmetry, grandeur, and use of geometry to create visually stunning spaces. Features often included expansive lawns, ornamental fountains, sculptures, carefully arranged flower beds, and paths designed in intricate patterns. Hand Mirrors Baroque hand mirrors were smaller, handheld versions of the larger Baroque mirrors. These hand mirrors were crafted to be both functional and elegant, reflecting the opulence and artistic style of the Baroque period. They were typically made with similarly ornate frames, often featuring exquisite detailing, intricate engravings, and decorative motifs. They were often carried as fashionable accessories by the elite during that time. STEP 2: After receiving the mirror, I painted it in maroon hue. STEP 3: Next, I used mouldit clay for the design, affixing it later on. STEP 4: Subsequently, I applied a coat of gold paint to the clay.
