DIRECTING
 A Leader LEADS.
 So its the
SUPERVISOR.
 directs and guides his/her subordinates
toward the attainment of a company goals
and objectives.
 Directing, as managerial function is
running the organization in accordnace
with policies and plans lai down by the
management.
 In order to attain established objectives,
it is necessary that management plan
creatively.
 Good planning starts with the setting of
near-term and ultimate objectives.

The supervisor’s job revolves around direction,
supervision and the technique of handling men.
Directing entails overseeing and supervising the
activities and personnel within organization.
Directing includes training, motivating, counseling
and disciplining employees for the purpose of
gaining their maximum contributions.
The direction

• Direction is the function of interpretation as
an instruction concerning the requirements for
the execution of a plan and some phase of it.
• As explained by Raplph Currier Daviz in “The
Fundamentals of of Management” its primary
purpose is ‘the constraints and regular of
action by interpretation, explanation,
instrutcion concerning the projects and its
requirements.
 The responsible manager or supervisor must
usually perform the function of direction with
respect to the requirements for the effective,
economical excution of orders and instructions

 The Direction of a plan may be personal or
formal. It may be written or oral, or both.
 It frequently involves the exercise of face-toface leadership by the executive or supervisor
with respect to his immediate subordinates.
 Direction, in brief, is order-giving.
 It may be transmitted in writing or given
orally.
 The tone of orders and instructions is
important, whether verbal or written.
 The subordinate is not a servant.

 The language and the tone should respect the
individuality of the recipient.
 As may be emphasized this is managerial
function which relates to activities that deal
directly with influencing, guiding, or
supervising subordinates in their jobs.
 The manager or supervisor must in some manner
communicate to his associates the
organization’s objectives, what he wishes done,
and so on.
 This communication function may take various
forms-speaking, writing or gesturing.

2. ATTITUDES OF SUBORDINATES
 The attitude of the supervisor toward his
subordinates is obviuosly a factor thst
conditions their attitude toward him.
 It conditions their acceptance ogf his
leadership.
 An expeienced supervisor must know jis key
subordinates personally. He should see that
they receive recognition from the company for
superior accomplishment and any other
intangible values decrease appropriate.
 This should be in addition to tangible rewards
for superior accomplishment toward the

2. ATTITUDES OF SUBORDINATES
 Unfortunately, there are supervisors, and they
are not few who are very bossy and guilty of
“overdirection”
 A bossy supervisor is one who gives unnecessary
orders or directives or issues them in minute
details tat are far from necessary.
 A redirection may also be used to the necesscity
of modifying original direction within the
framework of the applicable orders and
interactions when changes in the condition of
exercise require it.

It is a process of adjustment or
seeking a new emotional
equilibrium for an employee.
Employees feeling cannot be ignored or
argued about. They are situational facts
which need to be accepted, understood and
dealth with, because managers supervise
whole men rather than their work.

How to listen to an employee
1. Let the supervisor know how the employee feels
about the situation which is very important. If the
supervisor knows these feelings, he may be able to
correct false
impressions among his men.

Thus it is essential to let the workers talk. To help
him do this,
the listener(whether or not he is supervisor,
personnel
manager, or counselor) should follow certain rules
to help the
person express his feelings. He should:
a. not argue
b. not ask probing question
c. not give advice
d. not try to direct the conversation
e. not force answers
f. not take sides
g. listen rather than talk
h. try to grasp what lies behind what the employee is
expressing
i. ramain impartial and never make moral judgement
j.above all, communicate to the speaker that he
appreciates how he tells.
