Before reading the article, I used to think that, the discussion of needing distinction in
gender and sex is something that has challenged society in moving forward with
acceptance of one another and that there is still much to discuss regarding this issue as
it still remains such a controversial and relevant topic today. After reading the article, I
now think that:
(1) this issue has gone this far such as using gender and sex interchangeably, in which
sociologists spent years opposing each other in if there is a distinction or is there not.
(2) Multiple factors affect sociologists’ conclusion of the sex-versus-gender distinction,
such as different societies all over the world and precedent accounts dating back to
almost 5,000 years ago.
(3) While ‘gender’ is deemed as a social construct and is established that it is related to
one’s identity, it is still believed that gender has the same definition as ‘sex’, that there it
should only be composed of 2 components: male and female.
(1) Some of the oppositions stated in the paper lacked in detailing as to what the author
wanted to point out. For example, the author references Connell’s on his take of sex as
one of the constraints in social arrangements but does not further explain the other
constraints that Connell might have mentioned.
(2) Distinction and Separationism are mentioned, however, they are quite different in
meaning. It’s quite unclear to me if the author also meant that gender and sex
separated.
(3) the discussion of femininity and masculinity dictating one’s gender is quite vague,
while it is a different topic on its own, it has been cited as to help in proving a case for
having a distinction.
(1) What did the author meant when they said that in distinction; it does not need a
passive/neutral body?
(2) If gender is supposed as a ‘social construct’ by sociologists, why do the oppositions,
which some are made by sociologists, continuously refer to gender and sex as the
same or disagree with having a distinction?
(3) How would additions to the two known sexes be conceded?
