A. THESIS/CLAIM (1 POINT)
POINT:
1 point: Responds to the prompt with a historically defensible thesis or claim that establishes a line of reasoning. The
thesis cannot merely restate the prompt, and must consist of one or more sentences located in one place, either in the
introduction or in the conclusion. Must contain both a claim and a line of reasoning.
B. CONTEXT (1 POINT)
POINT:
1 point: Describes a broader historical context relevant to the prompt. The response must relate the topic of the
prompt to broader historical events, developments, or processes that occur before, during, or continue after the time
frame of the question. Not awarded for merely a phrase or reference.
C.
EVIDENCE (2 POINTS)
POINT:
1 point: Provides specific examples of at least two pieces of evidence relevant to the topic of the prompt. The response
identifies specific historical examples relevant to the topic, but does not use them to effectively support the argument.
2 points: Supports an argument in response to the prompt using at least two pieces of specific and relevant
evidence. The response uses specific historical evidence to support an argument in response to the prompt.
D: ANALYSIS AND REASONING (2 POINTS)
POINT:
1 point: Uses historical reasoning (e.g. comparison, causation, CCOT) to frame or structure an argument that addresses
the prompt. Reasoning may be uneven or imbalanced, or evidence may be overly general or lacking specificity.
2 points: Demonstrates a complex understanding through sophisticated argumentation that is relevant to the prompt.
a) explaining multiple themes or perspectives to explore complexity or nuance, OR
b) explaining multiple causes or effects, multiple similarities or differences, multiple continuities or changes,
OR
c) explaining relevant and insightful connections within and across periods or geographical areas, OR
d) supporting a complex argument using at least four pieces of specific and relevant evidence
This understanding must be part of the argument, and not merely a phrase or reference.
