A strong step towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat: it will reduce India's dependence on mineral oil
imports from foreign countries. India has, for decades, been dependent on imports to meet the
demand for these specialty fuels.

Exclusome:
• Researchers have recently identified a previously unknown compartment in
mammalian cells named ‘exclusome’
• It is a newly discovered organelle in mammalian cells.
• It is made up of DNA rings known as plasmids.
• It is located within the cell plasma.
• This is peculiar because eukaryotic cells (cells with nuclei) usually keep
most of their DNA in the cell nucleus, where it is organized into chromosomes.
• This proves that cells are capable of differentiating between DNA that is their own and still needed and DNA
that is foreign
• A chromosome is a long, thread-like structure found in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells, including the cells of
animals, plants, and fungi.
• Each chromosome is made up of DNA tightly coiled many times around proteins called histones that support
its structure.

Ozone hole above Antarctica is now three times the size of Brazil
• The ozone hole over Antarctica is one of the biggest on record, roughly
three times the size of Brazil. It's a natural phenomenon, but scientists are
concerned climate change could begin reopening ozone holes.
• Satellite measurements over Antarctica have detected a giant hole in the
ozone layer.
• The hole, which scientists call an “ozone-depleted area” was 26 million
square kilometers (10 million square miles) in size, roughly three times the
size of Brazil(The European Space Agency Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite made the recordings)
Ozone holes grow and shrink every year
• The ozone layer is a trace gas in the stratosphere, one of the four
layers of the Earth’s atmosphere.
• It functions as a protective gas shield that absorbs ultraviolet
radiation, protecting humans and ecosystems from dangerous
amounts of UV. Most skin cancers are caused by exposure to high
amounts of UV radiation
• The size of the ozone hole over Antarctica fluctuates each year,
opening each year in August and closing again in November or
December.
• ozone hole opens up because of the rotation of the Earth causing specials winds over the closed landmass of
Antarctica. “The winds create a mini climate, creating a shield over Antarctica preventing it from mixing with
surrounding air. When the winds die down, the hole closes,”
• Scientists believe this year’s big ozone hole could be due to the volcanic eruptions at Hunga Tongain Tonga
during December 2022 and January 2023.
• “Under normal conditions, gas released from a volcanic eruption stays below the level of the stratosphere,
but this eruption sent a lot of water vapor into the stratosphere,”
• In 1987,The Montreal Protocol was created to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of
these harmful substances.
Pontus Tectonic plate
• A long-lost tectonic plate dubbed ‘Pontus’ was recently discovered by chance by scientists studying ancient
rocks in Borneo.
• It is a long-lost tectonic plate recently discovered in the west Pacific Ocean.
•
Discovered by Suzanna van de Lagemaat, a doctoral candidate Netherlands, and her colleagues.
• The Pontus plate was a significant tectonic plate, about a quarter of the size of the Pacific Ocean.
• It can be traced back as far as 160 million years, and even more recently to around 20 million years back.
• It once underpinned the region now known as the South China Sea.
• Named the ‘Pontus plate’ due to its association with the ancient Pontus Ocean.
• Over time, it gradually diminished in size before being pushed under the Australian plate to the south and
China to the north, ultimately disappearing 20 million years ago.
• A tectonic plate (also called lithospheric plate) is a massive, irregularly shaped slab of solid rock, generally
composed of both continental and oceanic lithosphere.
• Plate size can vary greatly, from a few hundred to thousands of kilometers across; the Pacific and Antarctic
Plates are among the largest.
• Plate thickness also varies greatly, ranging from less than 15 km for young oceanic lithosphere to about 200
km or more for ancient continental lithosphere

How the discovery was made?
• The subducting plate is actually denser than the surrounding mantle, so gravity basically pulls the plate down
into the mantle.
• A subducted plate leaves behind traces when it 'sinks' into Earth's mantle – namely, fragments of rock
hidden in mountain belts.
•
•
•
During the process of subduction, however, the upper parts of the subducting
plate are sometimes scraped off.
The researchers used geological data to reconstruct the movements of the
current plates with computer modelling, which hinted at a wide area
potentially vacated by a subducted plate.
Using magnetic techniques, researchers determined the basalt from Borneo
were relics of Pontus that were left behind when this part of the plate
subducted, some 85 million years ago.
