Activating your knowledge #7 Dar, Jevelyn B. 2021 May 16, BSED 2-H 1. Recall the most unforgettable piece (novel, short story, poem and the like) that you have ever read in your life, what makes this one memorable? The Analects is the most unforgettable that I have read in my life. This one is memorable for me because it is a collection of Confucius’s conversation and teachings, it strongly emphasizes the importance of the morality for the betterment of oneself and in society in general. The Analects lays out several teachings for both commoners and rulers to follow in the pursuit of morality. This present advice on a various behavior and moral virtues that people should cultivate if they wish to live in accordance with spiritual practice that Confucius espoused. It primary goal is to produce well-cultivated men who would carry out themselves with gravity, speak correctly and demonstrate integrity in all things. 2. What do you think is the biggest challenge that students face when reading? Why? I think the biggest challenge that students face when reading is the issues in decoding also known as sounding out words, decoding is when children are able to put sounds through letters in order to voice out written language. It is common for beginner readers to struggle when they meet new on unfamiliar words or terms but it becomes more easier with production of speech sounds by leader and also repeated practice with reading out loud. If the students continue to struggle, then maybe a specific learning difficulty present, or a physical impairment that is preventing them from physically seeing letter or hearing the sounds in spoken language. Also poor comprehension also a biggest challenge for the students there is a lot going on in reading, from letter and word recognition to understanding meaning at the phrase, sentence and paragraph level. When a beginner reader encounters vocabulary they do not know or do not due to inaccurate decoding so they likely to ship ahead. 3. Is teaching reading difficult? Why or why not? Reading is difficult so is Comprehension relies on mastery of decoding. Students who struggle to decode find it difficult to understand and remember what has been read because their efforts to grasp individual words are so exhausting, they have no resources left for understanding. 4. What do you think are the challenges in teaching reading to students? How do they affect the teaching and learning process? Teaching reading is a job for an expert. Contrary to the popular theory that learning to read is natural and easy, learning to read is a complex linguistic achievement. For many children it requires effort and incremental skills development therefor, teaching reading requires considerable knowledge and skill acquired over several years through focused study and supervised practice. The difficulty of teaching reading are the children’s interest in reading must be stimulated through focused study and supervised practice. For best result, the teacher must instruct most students directly, systematically and explicitly to decipher words in print, all the while keeping in mind the ultimate purpose of reading, which is to learn, enjoy, and understand. To accommodate children and tailor variability the teacher must assess children and tailor lessons to individuals. She must interpret errors, give corrective feedback select examples and illustrate concept, explain new ideas in several ways, and connect linguistic symbols with real reading and writing. 5. Try to reflect on the quote “A writer only begins a book. A reader finishes it.” Samuel Johnson. What does Samuel Johnson wants to convey. I think it is true for the simple reason that a writers words on a book are intent until a readers mind brings them to life. And I do believe that the writers make choices about words, details, images and structure in order to convey what they are trying to explore, there is also something intuitive and uncanny about the process, with writers making unconscious decision as well as conscious ones as they craft a text and that opens the door for readers to see even more that the writers might have intended and to come up with a range of interpretations about words on the book.
