TEACHER’S ACTIVITY
STUDENT’S ACTIVITY
Good afternoon, class!
Good afternoon, Sir!
We all stand for our short prayer.
(The class will rise and offer their personal
prayer silently through the teacher.)
How do you do, class?
Brilliant! So am I. Thank you. Please take
your seats now.
We’re fine, Sir. Thank you! How about you,
Sir?
Thank you, Sir!
First and foremost, we will introduce
ourselves to the class. I am Teacher Rain, my
pleasure to meet you!
And I am Teacher Beb, nice to meet you, too,
class!
We are your teachers in English this
afternoon.
Likewise, Sir!
Likewise, Ma’am!
Aye aye, Sir and Ma’am!
RECALL
Before we proceed to our discussion, let us
firstly have a short recall about what we had
last meeting. What was your reading material
all about? (Teacher will call a volunteer.)
Very good! What is the piece’s original genre
of literature?
(A volunteer answers.) Sir, we read on and
studied Rip Van Winkle by Washington
Irving. It was he who slept for 20 years only
to find out that he awoke to a different
America.
A short story, Sir.
Indeed. However on your previous reading
material, to what genre was it transferred?
All right! We find that a single piece can be
modified into a different genre without losing
its essence, don’t we? Why is that so?
That’s right! Every piece of every genre of
literature follows or possesses certain literary
elements so that, even when they go across
genres, the meaning and lesson will not be
lost.
At this juncture we will get to know these
literary elements and which of them are
unique with one another, that is to say
between a short story and a play.
It was modified from being a short story to a
play, Sir.
(A student may infer.) Sir, perhaps because of
the literary elements.
Understood, Sir!
(Teacher will discuss what is on the
PowerPoint about the Elements of a Short
Story and
Nice try, Group 2. Group 1 and 3 you can

Group 2 has 1 (1) point.
And Group 3 has two (2) points. It’s alright
group two, you can still gain points later.
Obviously, what we did in our game was to
determine if you really have read the material
given to you. It also reveals your skills in
collaborating with your group members.
It’s Irving’s birth year.
(Group 1 raises flag)
It’s Irving’s death year.
PRE-READING
Now, let us proceed in discussing the terms
we have encountered in the game through
watching a short video clip. I want you to pay
attention and to take note of the famous
writers that will be presented and their styles
of writing.
(Students sit down)
Now class, upon watching the video can
somebody please enumerate the “four great
names” who won international fame.
Okay you’re right. Can you recall his writing
style?
Very good! Now what are the names of the 3
remaining writers?
Very good! Also Poe was in fact credited with
the creation of detective stories. Who among
you loves to read and watch detective stories?
Oh see that there are quite a lot of students
who loves detective stories. Now, who are the
other two?
Yes ma’am!
(Students watching video)
Yes and his form of writing was?
Yes, very good. Who is the last writer then?
Washington Irving ma’am.
Very Good!
Based from my notes ma’am, his writing style
is characterized by humour and satire.
Edgar Allan Poe ma’am and his writing was
characterized by a dark and mystery.
From the video that we have watched a while
ago, we already knew that our topic is about
the “Emerging America: The Birth of a
Republic”, right?
(students raises hands)
William Cullen Bryant ma’am.
Before we proceed to discussing the reading
material that was assigned to you, let us first
narrow down the concepts and facts that we
have seen in the video.
He was a naturalist ma’am.
James Fenimore Cooper ma’am. His writing
is about some sort of a mix between history
and romance.
Can somebody please provide a word or a
phrase that we can associate to the word
“EMERGENCE/ EMERGING”?
Yes, please. (pointing to a student)
Good. Who else?
Yes, ma’am.
Okay, you’re right. Anymore?
Very good! You are all right. Emerging
America can also be considered as its rising,
its “coming out” and/or its birth from being
(students raise their hands)
colonized by the European people. In other
words, it was their early independence period.
Rising, ma’am.
During this time, the American writers were
still influenced by the writing styles and
forms of their colonizer.
As time goes by, the writers began to realize
and compose a national literature that would
reflect their EXPERIENCES. With that being
said, in your opinion, what could be the
possible themes of their writings?
Ma’am, I think it’s about the coming out of
something
For me, it is something similar to what was
mentioned, it’s the birth of something,
ma’am.
For somebody who has been free from
grudges or violence or unwanted past, what
do you think will now be his/her mindset?
Okay, that is one. Another?
Okay, it’s as if you can relate from that
experience, huh? Just kidding.
Anymore?
Okay, good. Those themes can be seen in the
literary works during that time. The advent of
“National literature” became an avenue for
new themes, writing styles and forms used by
the writers. As we have seen in the video,
Maybe that person can now think about the
brighter side of life.
Noah Webster is heavily noted for
contributing what?
Maybe he/she can now smile more often.
Okay, good! Can you still recall hat was
special about this dictionary?
Not really ma’am.
Very good. Its purpose is to insist that
American have its own language.
None ma’am.
Prior to discussing his piece “Rip Van
Winkle”, we will now proceed to
understanding the profile of one of the four
great names who won international fame
during this period, he is Washington Irving.
He contributed a dictionary ma’am.
Based on your book, who is Washington
Irving?
Okay. Good, what else?
Yes ma’am. It was An American Dictionary
of the English Language.
Okay, anymore?
Okay. Thank you! Just for clarification,
Washington Irving was not born on 1738 but
rather on April 3rd, 1783. According to the
accounts about his biography, he died at the
age of 76 due to heart failure.
He is the pioneer of short story ma’am.
You’re right when you say that he is the
pioneer of short story. In fact, he is credited
with perfecting the American short story and
for writing for entertainment as opposed to
enlightening. He was also known as the
“American man of Letters”.
He was intended for legal profession, but his
studies were interrupted by illness
necessitating a voyage to Europe. He then,
decided to quit law and began to write for a
living. Two of his famous short stories are
“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and the story
that we will be discussing, “Rip Van Winkle”
Lastly, Irving used to rove through the
Hudson Valley to gather Dutch legends. One
of which is “Rip Van Winkle”.
Pre-Reading Activity:
As, Irving anchored his piece to the Dutch
legends. I will be handling each of you a
“Human Bingo” which is consists of
experiences of people that can be considered a
legend or a myth to reveal what you know
about it.
Do you know how to play a BINGO?
Okay, it is alright. All you have to do is to
roam around the classroom and ask your
classmates whether they heard about that
He was born on 1738 and died on 1859.
During his childhood he used to rove through
Hudson, Valley.
experience being told by their friends or a
family member or whether they have similar
experience and story. If yes, your classmate
will sign the “square” where he/she is familiar
with. All you have to do is to look for (5) five
classmates who have heard about the
experiences in each box.
Please take note: Your classmate should have
heard about the story being told by someone,
not because they have read it themselves
No, ma’am.
The first student to complete a line—
diagonally, horizontally or vertically—set of
experiences in the BINGO sheet will be the
winner of the game.
Any questions?
Good. You may now start asking your
classmates.
(Attached is the Human Bingo)
(Discusses the results of the game—common
experiences or stories that the students know)

In the reading assignment that was given to
you last time, Rip Van Winkle, we have

SYNTHESIS
Wow! Great job class. Did you have fun?
Now, will you all please settle down and go
back to your proper seats.
Now class, can you please again enumerate
some differences in the setting in Scene 1 and
Scene 3?
Yes. What else?
Yes, very good. What other differences was
made?
Yes ma’am
Yes, very good. Nice observations! So there
were quite a number of changes that was
made to the inn. Well, do you recall if what
did Rip and the other townsfolk do at the inn?
Very good. The inn was a place where Rip
and the townspeople commonly go to. People
would rather go here to rest and hang out all
day rather than to work in order to make more
profit of their own.
The inn actually represents America in the
past before the occurrence of the revolution.
Who among you is familiar with the
American revolution?
Before, America was colonized by the British
monarchy. So, they cannot really act
independently they’re under the British. So
just like the people at the Inn, America acted
passively and didn’t take action in improving
their self.
(Student’s goes back to their seats)
Um, the inn where Rip once had gone to
change into a hotel ma’am.
Also the flag changed ma’am
The picture of King George changed into
George Washington’s picture ma’am.
Well, ma’am based from the script they said
that it was a place where the people
commonly hang out to.
Now, if you were in the shoes of the townsfolk
at the inn would you choose to act like them?
If not, what would you do then? Or maybe
let’s but it this way. If you have a problem at
school would you let it be or take action?
(students raises their hands)
Ok, well yes it would have been a little scary.
Any other opinions?
I commend you for your bravery. Well, I can
see that you have different opinions of the
matter. Now there was a time came when the
Americans realized that they were really
oppressed so his was then the time when they
took action.
The period was called as the American
Revolution. It was a time where people
violently revolted against King George
because they’ve now wanted to get out of the
grips of the British rule and build their own
independent nation.
The inn actually represented the time before
the revolution. During that period the
American people were quite passive and
unmoving just like the people at the inn.
But after Rip woke up the Inn was changed
into the Union hotel. What time period do you
think did Rip woke up to, was it before or
during the American revolution?
Hmm. not quite the answer.
Yes, you are right the time period when rip
woke up to was after the revolution. As
compared to the inn the union hotel was a
place of productivity. If you are to read the
original text or story of the Rip Van Winkle
the Union hotel is more elaborately described
there.
Ma’am, if I were them I think that I would
have acted the same because I think that it is
too risky to take action. You don’t really have
a clue of what’ll happen.
Well ma’am for me I would rather choose to
take action because at least I know to myself
that I have done something for myself/
country.
So the time Rip woke up that was the period
when America was now slowly starting to
build their government. This was the time of
the Birth of the American republic. The time
when America started to emerge from their
rubbles and the remnants of their war with the
British Monarchy.
During the revolution ma’am.
No, it was after ma’am.
Now class do you think that the story of Rip
was possible? Did he really sleep for 20
years?
Ma’am I think that it was only a symbol of
the passage of time ma’am.
EVALUATION
Rip was put in a time where he jumped to a
time where no one remembered him. All the
people he once knew we’re either gone or are
not there anymore. It’s like he was robbed out
of his identity because the things he used to
have we’re all gone- his wife, his friends, his
possessions and the people he once adored
and loved. Now,
“If you had come into an entirely new
situation, how would you fit into society that
I also agree with him ma’am
is nothing like the one that you were used
to?”
If I was him ma’am I think that I might have
panicked.
I will now give you these pieces of paper and
in there I want you to write your comment
your answers to this question and you can
also write a hashtag below it. You can draw
your own profile picture in the space provided
and make your own username. Now, after
writing your answers you can then post it in
Washington Irving’s timeline in order for him
to see your comments.
Do you have any questions class about the
activity class?
Ok you may now then proceed.
Wow I can see that you all have very
wonderful questions. Let us then read some of
your answers.
None ma’am.
Homework
Washington Irving was really very fond of
collecting Dutch legends. So, class for your
homework I want you to help Irving in
finding new legends for his new collection
entitled “_______ myths and legends”. To
accomplish this, I want you to interview
someone who knows any legends. It can be
your lolo/s or lola/s because stories like these
were really quite famous during their time.
You can also interview your parents or maybe
aunts.
(Students writes their answers)
Afterwards, I want you to make a myth of
your own based from your interview and
choose any of the following to serve as your
final output.
1. Podcast/ Radio drama
2. Video of you telling a story
3. Make a script using your classmates as
the characters or actors and actresses.
(Make sure that you follow the
conventions of a script. You can refer
here for the conventions
https://www.writersstore.com/how-towrite-a-screenplay-a-guide-toscriptwriting/ )
You can do it with a group of your choice.
Each group should at least have 3-4 members.
Make sure that everyone in the group does
something.
This will be due next week Tuesday.
Do you have any questions for your
homework class?
(students copy the link)
Then that’s it. Class dismissed. Bye class!
None ma’am.
Good bye ma’am.
