Letter of Explanation for Canada study permit
Thank you for this opportunity, I have been admitted by the University of Manitoba into the
university 1 program (see attached: admission offer), the admission is valid for 3 academic
intakes (summer, winter & fall), I’m hoping you would find me worthy to be granted a study
permit for the summer intake to join my peers. My name is Nicholas Chidiebere Irabor with
passport number A11547129.
Educational Background and Work Experience
I finished secondary school as it’s called in this part of the world in year 2006 and I majored
in sciences (see attached: WAEC result). During my time in secondary school, I was one of the
top three (3) students in my class as I excelled academically. Even then my love for computer
science was evident as I took the prize for the second-best student in computer science in my
class and I assisted in setting up the computer laboratory when called upon. Ever since I can
remember I have been told to be a medical doctor as it was the holy grail of other courses,
making me ignore the love I always had for computers. After the completion of my secondary
school education, I moved to Benin Republic for a local computer engineering training in 2013
which was concluded in 2017. Upon my return, I applied for an engineering job at McRay
Enterprise in in Computer Village, Lagos and resigned on the 12th month of 2017.
In February 2018, I was employed by Trackoy Integrated Services as an IT engineer in Ogba
Lagos. I resigned in July 2019 as a staff because I wanted to focus more on developing my
digital skills. I have since then freelanced at Trackoy Integrated Services as an IT expert. I
believe all these experiences I’ve had is gearing me up for the future as I look to start my
business after my education and having served under people in different capacity, I have picked
up some important lessons. The piece missing is for me to come and study in Canada, I hope you
grant me this opportunity.
Why Canada
Choosing Canada was probably the easiest decision I made when choosing to get an
international degree in computer science, while the course is being offered in many schools in
Nigeria, it doesn’t still beat attending a school in Canada, from my research schools in Nigeria
haven't update their curriculum to the latest being taught and I would be at a gross disadvantage
if I decide to pursue my course here. I chose Canada because I’ll be getting an international
degree, in Nigeria having an international degree be it for business or employment purposes
easily sets you aside and people would want to associate with you. Canada’s education system is
one of the best and most attractive for international students because it is built to cater for the
unique needs of students. In Nigeria, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) go on strike
a lot, they recently just called off an 8-month long strike, I do not want to have to spend 6 years
doing a four-year course. The multicultural side of Canada will prove very useful for me because
having to interact with people of diverse backgrounds and ethnicity will help me broaden the
way I look and interact with people, and I can take that back to my home country so I can infuse
that into my culture. I could have chosen other European countries, but Canada stands out for me
because of how safe it is as a country, I know crime isn’t eliminated anywhere but the relatively
low crime rate of Canada shows how peaceful its residents are and further eliminates any doubt
as to my choice of country for study.
Choice of program and School
Computer science is the most sought-after course in Nigeria as published by vanguard, there
aren’t many talented professionals to cater for the needs of the sector as almost every business
needs technology to upscale and fully survive in this digital age. The course itself is broad and I
look forward to being introduced to different aspects of it during the 4 years assigned for the
course. I hope to specialize in Hardware Engineering but having the full spectrum of what’s
possible is one of the main reasons I enrolled for a BSc and there’s no better place for me to do it
than Canada. I have taken various steps that has led me to the final decision to get a degree in
Computer science; I picked up graphics design in late 2019 in which I tried to sell my services on
Fiverr and Upwork (freelancing websites), I taught myself Relational Database Management
System (SQL) and Web Design, Having an international degree in computer science will
drastically launch my career and help me navigate the tech world as I would be earning a
practical hands-on approach on how to tackle problems which would have taken me trials and
errors to learn.
I chose to study in University of Manitoba because of its attraction for international students,
I wouldn’t feel left out because it houses people of diverse backgrounds, and it is what I always
wanted when I envisioned studying in Canada as I want to soak in as many cultures as possible.
U of M is western Canada first university located in the heart of the country and they offer one of
the best curriculums tailored to lead to academic excellence. The university also has relatively
low school fees for international students compared to other schools in Canada while
maintaining a high quality of education in a competitive environment.
Ties with my home country
I am a Bonafede Nigerian born on 30th August 1982 into the family of Mr. and Mrs. Irabor.
I have been to different states in the country to explore the recreation areas. Family is my
backbone and without my family I wouldn’t be the person I am today.
especially my Uncle AKPOROWHE OBRUTHE THOMAS. I have my older sister and younger
brother who are present in Nigeria, my parents base in Israel, I can’t imagine a future where I
won’t see them anymore because I traveled out of the country. As a first-born son in my culture,
I am responsible for my family, and I have a duty to take care of everyone including my parents
and siblings. This sense of responsibility has been instilled in me ever since I was a little boy,
and I must carry it out. My family supports me going to study in Canada for a short time even
though my absence will be tough, they hold on to the hope that it is only for a short while and I
will be back soon.
I am a peaceful person, and I will not cause harm or chaos during my time in Canada if I’m
granted a Visa.
Financial plans
Not many people can get lucky enough to have someone interested in their education and
willing to help fund their dreams. My uncle, Mr. AKPOROWHE OBRUTHE THOMAS has
pledged to cover my tuition fee, living and every other expense for the duration of my stay in
Canada (as stated in the sponsorship letter, please find attached) so I won’t need to work to cater
for myself in Canada.
He understands the financial implications of this commitment and has assured me of this
commitment. My uncle is a businessman who believes in hard work and commitment in
whatever one sets out to do. His business generates enough money to fund the expenses of his
business and the expenses for my studies (see attached: bank statement).
Plans and goals.
Nigeria is blessed with talent, and I see myself as one, I hope to impact this talented
population in various ways by being an employer and a talent refiner. My vision is to create a
company which manufactures computer systems just like Apple company in Nigeria: when I was
learning computer engineering it made me realized that Nigeria is struggling in manufacturing
aspect of technologies and shifted my thinking to be part of the people that will solve it, then an
idea stuck in my head of how I can create a business from the gathering of talented individuals
with the sole aim of creating a new brand of computers just like Steve Jobs has done to create
Macintouch. It’s one of the various things I hope to learn from my experience in studying in
Canada.
I have an offer from my uncle to establish me in my area of specialization as he has done for
other members of the family on completion of my studies. More importantly I hope to grow my
company as planned with the aim of helping talented Nigerians like me to achieve their purpose.
After my studies, I intend to come and establish myself in my home country Nigeria to fulfil my
dreams and help boost the economy of the country by creating a more digitalized society and
solving problems with technology while being close to my family.
Conclusion
Thank you for the time taken to go through my humble explanation, I sincerely hope that this
letter provides you with any information you’d need to consider me for a visa and clears any
doubt you might have on my application. I know and understand that I’m not entitled to being
given a study permit and it’s a privilege to be considered for one.
Yours Sincerely
Nicholas Irabor
