Probe placed externally on the abdomen over the site of the bladder. An ultrasonic transducer transmits sound waves which are reflected from the bladder to the transducer Indications To see how the bladder empties, to determine health issues, to visualize any inflammation, to determine if there is residual urine or incomplete emptying. CONSIDERATIONS Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Provide patient with routine voiding measures including privacy, normal voiding positions, sound of running water, Encourage/provide appropriate perineal cleansing Provide appropriate catheter care when catheter is present Catheterize patient when indicated Maintain patency of any indwelling catheter Educate patients (and family members) on catheter care and the importance of catheter care if s/he will be discharged home with the catheter in place Outcomes/Evaluation information is gathered on urinary retention, inflammation, or other possible bladder/kidney problems Potential Complications There may be pain during urination after the procedure for a few hours.
