We measure economic freedom based on 12 quantitative and qualitative factors, grouped into four broad categories, or pillars, of economic freedom: Rule of Law (property rights, government integrity, judicial effectiveness) Government Size (government spending, tax burden, fiscal health) Regulatory Efficiency (business freedom, labor freedom, monetary freedom) Open Markets (trade freedom, investment freedom, financial freedom) Each of the twelve economic freedoms within these categories is graded on a scale of 0 to 100. A country’s overall score is derived by averaging these twelve economic freedoms, with equal weight being given to each. More information on the grading and methodology can be found in the appendix. 2. From 2012 to 2016, China's data is close to 52, between repressed and mostly unfree. From 2016 to 2017, China's data increases quickly, it moved to mostly unfree. From 2017 to 2021, China's data stayed around 58. From 2021 to 2022, China's data sudden drop below 50 is the lowest since 2002. 3. Japan' data from 2012 to 2022 The data from 2012 to 2016, it is close to 73, is between mostly free and moderately free. 2017, the data decreased to 69 or so, That's the lowest data between 2012 and 2022. From 2017 to 2021, the data increased around 73. 2022, the date also decrease quickly, it moves to 70. 4.
