F
rom the Law of Buoyancy developed by ancient
Greek engineer and scientist Archimedes to
modern inventions like steam engines by James
Watt, which was an important contribution to industrial revolution, Mechanical Engineering has been
pivotal in science and evolution, not to mention in the
way we live. Thus, like Civil Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering is also one of the oldest and broadest
branches under engineering domain.
Mechanical engineering is derived from the need
to design and manufacture machines and system of
machines. This branch of engineering has a spread
from micro scale parts and devices like sensors and
inkjet printer nozzles to large systems like spacecraft
and Bucket-Wheel Excavator. From advanced energy
systems to solid-waste engineering, The American
Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has listed
36 technical divisions as part of the Mechanical Engineering. A Mechanical Engineer converts an idea into
a saleable product. In terms of functions, Mechanical
Engineering can be divided in different areas. Being
a branch of engineering, some of these functions are
related to technology, but not all do. Among these
fields are:
Engineering
Quick guide to Mechanical Engineering
Product Design: Design & develop products ranging from micro scale devices to
turbines.
Research and Development: Discovering solutions to problems & human needs
and creating new products and knowledge.
Manufacturing: Producing merchandise using machines and tools.
Systems management: Overseeing operations of a large system, such as a power
plant, as well as supervising the people who work there.

M
echanical Engineering includes design, manufacture, installation and
operation of engines, machines, robotics, heating & cooling systems
and manufacturing processes. In this profession, you will be responsible
for designing and developing machines right from bicycles to supersonic fighter jets which can be extremely challenging and fulfilling, requiring analytical
skills together with an ability to work in a team. You must love machines and be
comfortable working with tools.
This is one of the most versatile and very physically demanding disciplines.
Working with materials, the discipline equips you to move beyond the facade and
make things work. Driven by laws of physics, this discipline seeks very good knowledge of Mathematics and Physics to excel.
The basic concepts of Mechanical Engineering would include; mechanics,
kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, and electricity.
There are several other fields which are interrelated with that of mechanical engineering such as aerospace engineering, metallurgical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, manufacturing engineering and chemical engineering.
The relevance of Mechanical Engineering is also apparent in other fields such
as Biomedical engineering, specifically with biomechanics, transport phenomena,
bio-mechatronics, bio-nanotechnology, and modeling of biological systems.
In order to be a mechanical engineer, the students need to have an understanding of the core concepts of mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, and electricity. The mechanical engineers utilize these

Job Prospects
The demand for the Mechanical Engineering jobs is high in India and abroad.
The popular and most common industries where a Mechanical Engineer can be
employed are Thermal Power Plants, Oil & Petroleum Plant, Electronics Industry,
Aerospace, Shipping Industry, Pharmaceutical Industry, to name a few.
Graduates can work in the automotive, aerospace, chemical, computer, communication, paper, power generation and almost all manufacturing industries.
Mechanical engineers also work in maintenance and service profiles in all industries. Also they can choose teaching profession in universities and colleges. Also,
this is one of the best branches to choose in times of recession since jobs are normally not difficult to find for a good Mechanical Engineer.
Mechanical Engineering students who are gainfully employed can earn anywhere between Rs. 3 to 4.5 lakh per annum in their first job. In IT product sector
requiring core technology skills, salaries range from 6 to 12 lakh pa. Today, a variety of roles are there for entry-level engineers in technical support and services,
infrastructure management etc. “It depends upon the student’s competence as to
how much will he or she is able to secure in terms of monetary compensation initially,” shares Himanshu Aggarwal, CEO, Aspiring Minds.
Shekhar Sanyal, Country Head of IET India (UK-based engineering association), says that core engineering subjects will be in high demand as always but the
application will constantly evolve. “IT will become embedded in all core functions
and will enable the core functions to become much more effective,” he shares. For

instance, GE India Technology Center hires engineers from Aerospace, Mechanical, Electronics, Electrical and Computer Science streams.
Students have also started looking back at what they call core engineering
jobs, that is to say “work in shop floor,” feels Micheal Baymiller, Director-HR at International Paper.

India has also set for itself an ambitious target of increasing the contribution of manufacturing output to 25 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2025, from 16
per cent currently. With the launch of the ‘Make in India’ campaign, it is expected
that India will get the desired recognition as the global manufacturing hub.
The Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflow into India’s miscellaneous mechanical and engineering industries during April 2000 to January 2015 stood at around
US$ 3,948.17 million, as per the data released by the Department of Industries Policy and Promotion (DIPP).
