Definition of Project Management
Project management is the process of leading the work of a team to achieve all project
goals within the given constraints.
The primary constraints are scope, time, and budget.
The secondary challenge is to optimize the allocation of necessary inputs and apply them
to meet pre-defined objectives.
The objective of project management is to deliver a complete project which complies with
the client's objectives. In many cases, the objective of project management is also to
shape the client's objectives.
A project is a temporary and unique endeavor designed to produce a product, service, or
result with a defined beginning and end to meet unique goals and objectives, typically to
bring about beneficial change or added value.
In practice, the management of such distinct project approaches requires the
development of distinct technical skills and management strategies.

Every team phase presents a certain
challenge to the team members
1. Orientation phase
("forming")
2. Polarization and conflict
phase ("storming")
3. Standardization
phase ("norming")
4. Performance
phase ("performing")
5. Parting phase
• Careful behavior
because people with
different points of view
come together
• Collect information
• Attempt to identify
expectations regarding
the individual
participants and of the
group
• Test team leaders if
necessary
• Project goals are
understood
• Members feel more
comfortable, cliques
are formed
• Differences (among
one another or
between goals and
personal interests)
become evident,
disagreements arise
• Group reaches
consensus about
behavior norms
• Recognition of
differences, esteem
and acceptance
increase
• Development of
conflict prevention
strategies
• The focus is on the
active, joint effort to
achieve the team goals
• Personal interests fade
into the background
• Team completes
tasks and prepares
to be disbanded
• Interest shift to the
individual: "What is
happening to
me next?"
• External orientation
increases

Questions need to be answered for to
define the challenge
Basic question / challenge to be resolved
• How can the basic question (the project is set up to solve) be described?
• What is the main issue / challenge he/she wants to be tackled in the project?
Decision makers + stakeholders/their motivation
Success criteria
• Who is the “ordering” client?
• Who has the real power?
• What are the goals of the decision makers?
• What are the concerns of the decision makers?
• Based on what goal/criteria will the decision maker evaluate the success
of a possible solution to a problem / project result?
Barriers to impact
Timeframe
• Insufficient client cooperation?
• Change of mind-set?
• Investment for the solution
• When are intermediate results available?
• When must the problem be solved?
• Meeting? Milestones?
Limitations to solution space
Depth of analysis
• What is not part of the analysis?
• What depth is required for the analysis?
• What scope of evaluation is targeted?
