The New York Times - Breaking News, US News, World News and Videos (nytimes.com)Civics entry May 25th, 2022 The article, Seattle City Council OKs more than $1M for police incentives, recruitment despite opposition, by Sarah Grace Taylor, on May 24, 2022, at 7:52 pm, is about how the City council gave millions of dollars to the Seattle police for recruiting despite the masses saying no. People argued that we need more training before giving them money. “Tomorrow marks the second anniversary of the police killing of George Floyd, yet this afternoon, the council is spending its time figuring out how to incentivize hiring more police, without having done anything in the last two years to hold police more accountable,” said Howard Gale, an organizer of police oversight activist group SeattleStop.org. “Accountability needs to come before incentives, or else we’re going to repeat the violence of 2020,” Gale added. “Throughout the public comment period, callers implored council members to spend the money on various social services and alternative public safety responses, rather than providing funds to the department which continues to exhibit racial disparities in force.” I think the author is biased towards not giving the police any money, as they only show quotes of opposition, and everything they say is against giving the police money. This ties to a question echoing throughout the country, should the police get a reform, or be abolished? This helps me be a better citizen as it educates me about the wrongs and rights of police in these country.
