It’s a group of sentences about a topic. The topic sentence has two parts. it gives you the topic that the writer wants to talk about, and it also gives you something called the controlling idea. This controlling idea tells you what the writer will say about the topic. The topic sentence gives your readers an idea of what they will be reading about. This way they can understand the paragraph more easily. 6 Topic Controlling idea My friend is a wonderful father. My friend is the most honest person I know. My friend has a terribly dangerous job. Some jobs are perfect for students. College students drop classes for three reasons. text messaging has become popular among teenagers. My uncle had a terrible and frightening experience as a young man. effective management requires four steps. These are good topic sentences because they give the reader an idea of what the paragraph will discuss. They give the reader an idea about the content of the paragraph but they don’t give any details. A good topic sentence is neither too general nor too specific. Video games are good. (too general because there is no specific controlling idea) Video games teach children to identify critical elements of a problem and create a problem model. (too specific because it gives you information that should come later in the paragraph) Video games teach children problem-solving strategies. Exercise 1: Good, too general, or too specific? 1. Then I felt something cold and smooth slide over my feet. Then I saw a snake slowly slithering over my toes. I felt terrible afraid, and my heart beat very fast. After the snake moved away, I screamed to my parents for help. They captured the snake and took it away. The experience frightened me, and I never went outside barefoot again. a. It usually reminds the reader of the topic and controlling idea. It emphasizes the main idea of the paragraph. It may also include what the writer has learned or why the topic is important. Sometimes, the concluding sentence offers a prediction, a request, or a warning. 18 Topic Sentence Learning a new language can be beneficial for three reasons. Concluding Sentence In conclusion, being able to speak a second language has many advantages. The concluding sentence may: Warn the reader. If you do not limit your sugar intake, you may suffer from heart conditions. Make a prediction. Soon everyone will be vaccinated against COVID-19. Give an opinion about the topic. Some people might disagree with the study because it was done on animals not humans. Do NOT introduce a new idea in the concluding sentence. In conclusion, learning a new language can cost a small fortune.
