2.6 Comments from sampled participants associated/affected by identified problems.
Base on the awareness conducted on the 14th /15th November 2023 we compiled the
following comments from the public participants.
 business owners
Many businesses were found in possession of dust bins and refuse bags which they used to
package and dispose their waste. However due to lack of knowledge and tools for waste
disposal they are disposing the garbage in those identified illegal dumping. Some were found
not complying to waste management procedures, when we approached them, they agreed to
comply while others refused to comply shifting the responsibility to town visitors and the
municipality for not delivering the services.
 Street vendors
Street vendor approached stated that they use illegal dumping points because they don’t know
where the collection points are located, and they are facing challenges of not having enough
dust bins and refusal bag provided by the municipality. Some claim that during the weekends
other people occupy their spots in their absence and not clean afterward.
What we observed
Many businesses are complying to waste management systems (they have bins and refusal
bags); however, they are dumping at illegal points because of not knowing the designated
collection points and infrastructure. We also observed existence of unregistered waste
collectors/recyclers, and homeless people looking for valuable trash and food, such individuals
leave the trash scattered around the collection point. Some street vendors are not familiar with
the interpretation of the permit conditions because is written in English and most of them only
speak Tshivenda language. We also observed delay in the waste collection from the Thulamela
personnel, this gives unregistered waste collectors/recyclers, and homeless time to come and
ravage through the bins, and therefore making the town all messy.
Storm water drain blockages are mostly caused by pouring oil contaminated water and food
leftovers by street food markets owners. Street mechanics are using public lots for fixing cars
without oil skimmers to prevent oil spillage.
