In this you will be tested on your speaking and writing skills. This part contains 7 different types of questions. i. Personal Introduction: This part of question will help you to prepare for your speaking and listening section. This question does not contribute to your score. You have 25 seconds to read the prompt and prepare your response and then 30 seconds to record your response. You are only able to record your response once. ii. Read Aloud: A passage of up to 60 words will come on your screen. You have 30 to 40 seconds to read and prepare. After that, start speaking. You will hear a short tone and after that tone your recording will be started. iii. Repeat Sentence: Repeat the sentence after listening to the recording of a sentence (Usually of 8 to 16 words). iv. Describe Image: An image will come on your screen. Describe that image in detail within 40 seconds. v. Retell Lecture: After listening or watching a lecture, retell the lecture within 40 seconds. vi. Answer Short Questions: Answer the question within a single or a few words after listening to a question. vii. Summarize written Text: After reading the text, write a summary of one sentence of the passage. You have 10 minutes to write your summary. viii. Essay: You have to write an essay of 200 to 300 words on a given topic within 20 minutes. Part 2: Reading (Time: 29 to 30 Minutes) Reading part contains five different types of questions. This part of the test is 29 to 30 minutes long. i. Reading and Writing Fill in the Blanks: A passage will come with some missing words. Beside each gap, there is a button with drop down list of options for the gap. Select the option you think best fill the gaps. ii. Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer: After reading the passage answer the multiple type of question by selecting more than one response. iii. Reorder Paragraphs: Several text boxes will appear on the screen in a random order. Put them in correct order. iv. Reading Fill in the Blanks: Passage will come on the screen with several gaps in it. Drag words from the below box to fill the gaps. 4 v. Multiple Choice Single Answer: After reading the passage answer the multiple-choice question by selecting one response. Part 3: Listening (Time: 30 to 43 Minutes) The listening part contains 8 different types of questions. i. Summarize Spoken Text: After listening to a recording (60 to 90 seconds), you have to write down a summary of 50 to 70 words. You have 10 minutes to listen and write your summary. ii. Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers: After listening to a recording answer multiple choice of a question by selecting more than one response. iii. Fill in the Blanks: A transcript of a recording appears on the screen, with several gaps. After listening to the recording, type the missing word in each gap. iv. Highlight Correct Summary: Select the best paragraph that best summarizes the recording after listening to a recording. v. Multiple Choice ingle Answer: After listening to a recording, select the paragraph that best summarize the recording. vi. Select Missing Word: Select the missing word from a list of options after listening to a recording. vii. Highlight Incorrect Words: The transcript of a recording appears on the screen. Identify the words in the transcript that differ from what is said after listening to the recording. viii. Write from Dictation: Type a sentence after listening to a recording of a sentence (8 to 16 words). 5 Part 1: Speaking and Writing Time Allowed: 54 to 67 Minutes Read Aloud Repeat Sentence Describe Image Retell Lecture Answer Short Questions Summarize Written Text Essay Writing 1) Read Aloud A passage (up to 60 words) will appear on your Screen. You have 30 seconds to read and prepare. After 30 seconds you will hear a beep sound. After beep sound, your recording will be started. a) Skills assessed: Speaking and Reading b) Total questions in exam: 5 to 6 c) Assessed on parameters: Fluency + Pronunciation + Content Fluency: For Fluency, you have to take care of these things. i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. Fluency means flow not speed. Speak at moderate pace. Don’t speak too fast or too slow. Take natural pauses. Give a little pause at any full stop or connector. Avoid hesitations. Don’t correct yourself. Don’t repeat the words. Pronunciation: For pronunciation, you have to take care of these things 6 i. Speak the words clearly. ii. Try to speak the words with s, es, ed clearly. Content: For content try to speak all the words from the passage. Marking Criteria Parameters Marks Fluency 5 Pronunciation 5 Content 5 (Almost 5 marks depend on the size of the passage) Marks Distribution: 10 marks (Fluency + Pronunciation) will go to your speaking. The remaining marks (Almost 5 marks of Content) will go to your reading. Strategies for Read Aloud: There are 2 types of strategies for Read Aloud. i. Read the Full Passage: In this strategy try to read the full passage. Skip the words which are difficult or the words you cannot pronounce. Don’t compromise on fluency. ii. One Line Strategy: In one line strategy tries to speak 8 to 12 words of the passage from anywhere. You have to speak these words 100 percent correctly. 2) Repeat Sentence Repeat the sentence after listening to the recording of a sentence (Usually of 8 to 16 words). a) Skills assessed: Speaking and listening. b) Total questions in exam: 10 to 12 c) Things to avoid: If you don’t remember the complete sentence do not stop. Try to repeat as much as you can. d) Assessed on parameters: Fluency + Pronunciation + Content. Fluency: For fluency you have to take care of these things. a) Don’t speak too fast or too slow. 7 b) Avoid hesitations. c) Don’t correct yourself. Pronunciation: For pronunciation take care of these things. a) Speak the words clearly. b) Speak the words with s, es, ed clearly. Content: For content try to speak as many words from the sentence as you can. Marking Criteria Parameters Marks Fluency 5 Pronunciation 5 Content 3 Marks Distribution: 10 marks (Fluency 5 + pronunciation 5) will go to your speaking. The remaining 3 marks of content will go to your listening. Strategies for Repeat Sentences: i. Try to speak full Sentence: In this strategy try to speak as many words as you can from the sentence. ii. Add a sentence at the end: In this strategy try to speak as many words as possible from the sentence and add a sentence or words from your own at the end of the sentence. 3) Describe Image You will have an image (Line, pie, random etc.) on your screen. You will have 25 seconds to prepare and 40 seconds to speak. a) Skills Assessed: Speaking b) Total Questions in Exam: 2 to 4 c) Assessed on parameters: Fluency + Pronunciation + Content Fluency: For fluency make sure of these things. 8 i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. Fluency means flow not speed. Speak at moderate pace. Keep it easy. Never speak difficult words. Avoid hesitations. Use templates. Pronunciation: For pronunciation you have to take care of these things. i. Try to speak the words clearly. ii. Don’t speak difficult words. Content: For content try to speak the keywords from the image. Marking Criteria Parameters Marks Fluency 5 Pronunciation 5 Content 5 Marks Distribution: All 15 marks will go to your speaking. Template for Describe Image “Topic name” is the main topic of this image and I have to speak for 40 seconds on this image. It is a very beautiful image and from this image I can see 1,2,3 (Keywords from image). I can also see (Keywords from image). I can also see 7,8,9 (Keywords from the image). To conclude the image was very informative. Note: If you don’t have enough keywords repeat the keywords that you have. 4) Retell Lecture You will have an audio/video lecture (Usually 40 to 90 seconds). After the audio you have 10 seconds to prepare. You will be given 40 seconds to retell the lecture. 9 a) Skills Assessed: Speaking and listening. b) Total questions in exam: 1 to 2 c) Assessed on parameters: Fluency + Pronunciation +Content Fluency: For fluency you have to take care of these things i. ii. iii. iv. v. Speak at moderate level. Avoid hesitations. Take natural pauses. Don’t correct yourself. Use the templates. Pronunciation: For pronunciation you have to take care of these things i. Don’t speak difficult words. ii. Only speak those words that you can easily pronounce. Content: For content write down the keywords on your notepad while the audio is going. Make clear notes. Write down the keywords on your notepad that you can easily speak. If you have less keyword repeat the keywords that you have written on your notepad. Marking Criteria Parameters Marks Fluency 5 Pronunciation 5 Content 5 Marks Distribution: 10 marks for fluency and pronunciation will go to your speaking. The remaining 5 marks will go to your listening. Template for Retell Lecture “Topic” was the main topic of this lecture and I have to speak for 40 seconds on this lecture. In this lecture he told about 1,2,3 (Keywords from the lecture). He also told about 4,5,6 (Keywords from the lecture). He also told about 7,8,9 (Keywords from the lecture). Overall, the lecture was very informative. 10 Note: If you have less keyword repeat the keywords that you have from that lecture. 5) Answer Short Question Answer the question within single or few words after listening to a question. a) Skills assessed: Speaking and listening. b) Total questions in exam: 2 to 5 Note: If you don’t know the answer, try to speak the keywords from the question. 6) Summarize Written Text After reading the text, write a summary of one sentence of the passage. You have 10 minutes to write your summary. You need to write the summary between 5 to 75 words. You have to complete the summary with one full stop. a) Skills assessed: Writing and reading. b) Total questions in exam: 1 to 2 c) Assessed on parameters: Content +Form + Grammar and spellings. Content: Write down main ideas (5 to 7 keywords) from the passage. Form: Only use one full stop. Write between 5 to 65 words. Grammar and Spellings: Don’t make spelling and grammar mistakes. Vocabulary: Don’t worry Marking Criteria Parameters Marks Content 2 Form 1 Grammar and Spellings 2 Vocabulary 2 11 Things to Take Care of in Summarize Written Text a) You have to use only one full stop/exclamation/question mark. b) You have to write between 5 to 75 words. c) Satisfy the marking criteria. d) You can use words/phrases from the passage. Methods for Summarize Written Text: There are 2 methods for summarize written text. 1) Method 1: Read the passage, get the idea from the passage and frame a sentence by yourself. 2) Method 2: Select 3 sentences from the passage. One from the start, 2nd from the middle and 3rd from the end of the passage and put these 3 sentences into template. Template for Summarize Written Text Although Sentence 1; however, sentence 2; therefore, sentence 3. 7) Essay Writing You have to write an essay of 200 to 300 words on a given topic. You have 20 minutes to write an essay. You can write an essay in your own words or by using a template. a) Skills Assessed: Writing Skills b) Total questions in exam: 1 to 2 c) Assessed on parameters: Content + Form + Grammar + vocabulary + Linguistic range + Structure + Spellings. Content: Write Keywords or ideas. Form: Write between 200 to 300 words. Grammar: Don’t make grammar mistakes. Vocabulary: Don’t make vocabulary mistakes. Linguistic range: Follow the template. There is a widespread worry that this will lead to a myriad of concerns in the world. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the above statement which relates to the” keywords “using a pragmatic approach. To commence with, there are several arguments in favor of my stance. The most important one not only includes the betterment of society but also includes the positive development of every individual on the planet. Because of the countless benefits, not only can one gain more when it comes to being successful and effective, but they can also improve efficiency, productivity, and quality of life with a great deal of efficacy and convenience. Another crucial factor in the aforementioned statement is that it is only likely to assist one to flourish, progress, and excel in a variety of fields and disciplines. Consequently, only when an individual adheres to such a system, they can expand their horizons, skills and acquire qualities such as commitment, dedication and perseverance. Hence it is evident why many are in favor of “Main keyword”. Lastly, in my opinion the government of Australia is taking a great initiative in educating its citizens against the negative impacts of the statement that “Essay statement”. Tips and Strategies For Tips and strategies follow the reorder paragraph rules Rules for Reorder Paragraphs 1) Subject Object Subject Rule (S+V+O): In English there is a rule of subject verb object. In reorder paragraphs the object of the first sentence will become the subject of the next sentence e.g. ✓ They eat oranges. ✓ Oranges they eat are very tasty. You can see that the ‘oranges’ in the first sentence is object and in next sentence oranges become the subject. Note: Same words should not be there, synonyms of the words could be there. 2) Noun Pronoun Rule: The sentence with noun will come before the sentence with pronoun e.g. ✓ The Research is conducted by Mr. Usman. ✓ He conducted this research in 2002. 3) Full Name Short Name Rule: The sentence with full name will come before the sentence with short name e.g. 15 ✓ Usman Zafar conducted this research. ✓ Zafar conducted this research in 2020. 4) Contrasting Words Rule: Contrasting words are the words for example Nevertheless, however, but, yet, in contrast, on the other hand, still etc. ✓ He is good at English But weak in Mathematics. 5) Additional information rule: Sentence with additional information will always come after the sentence with basic information e.g. ✓ Mr. Usman likes oranges. ✓ Mr. Usman also likes apples. 6) Time Sequence Order Rule: Normally from the past to present Strategies for Solving Reorders There are two types of strategies to solve reorder paragraphs a) Finding independent sentence: In first strategy we first find the independent sentence and then find the following sentence by using subject object subject rule. b) Finding pairs: In this strategy we find pairs. a) Finding Independent Sentence In this strategy we first find the independent sentence. Now the question is what is independent sentence? Independent Sentence i. ii. iii. iv. Topic sentence Not dependent on other sentences Gives a general idea It will mainly consists of proper noun e.g. persons name, research name, book title, technical term, concept etc. v. It will not start with pronoun (he, she, it, they) vi. Independent sentences will not start with contradicting words e.g. Firstly, secondly, however, therefore, as well as, furthermore, additionally, but etc. 16 vii. If there is any short form along with the complete form, sentence with complete form or term will always come before the sentence containing short form e.g. Dr Simon Jones Dr Jones. The sentence with Dr Simon jones will come before the word Dr Jones . viii. Articles Rule: There are 2 types of articles. Indefinite articles ( a, an) and definite articles ( the ). Sentence with indefinite articles will always come before the sentence with definite articles given that they are used for the same noun e.g. ✓ Mr. Usman bought a house. ✓ The house is very beautiful. If there are some kinds of examples, they are most likely come after the explanation of the same topic. b) Finding Pairs ➢ In case of 5 sentences: Make 2 pairs and put the remaining sentence, i. ii. iii. In start if it is independent sentence In middle if it gives more information about the 2nd sentence In last if it gives the more information about 4th sentence ➢ In case of 4 sentences: If there are 4 sentences, i. ii. There are two types of nouns: a) Proper noun: Proper noun starts with capital words e.g. Ali etc. b) Common noun: e.g. boy, girl etc. How to identify the nouns i. Words end with tion, sion, ance, ence, ism, ment, age all are nouns e.g. population, terrorism, government, environment, excellence etc. ii. Try to make the plural of the word e.g. boy boys government governments etc. iii. Words satisfy this sentence is nouns: He/It is my e.g. It is my book or He is my friend. iv. Add the word “The” if it gives clear word then it is noun. Pronoun: Words that are used in place of noun e.g. he, she, it, they, we, me, them, their, her, his etc. Verb: Expresses action e.g. eat, drink, write etc. There are two types of verb: a) Main verb: Eat, Sleep, Drink etc. b) Helping verb: is, am, are, can, should, would, could etc. How to identify the verb i. Try to put “ing” with the word e.g. eat eating drink drinking write writing etc. ii. Try to add the word “To” then it is verb e.g. I am going to eat, She is going to sleep etc. iii. Try to put I can before the word e.g. I can write, she can drink etc. Adjective: Modifies or describes nouns and pronouns e.g. young, very etc. How to identify the adjective i. Add the sentence He/It is before the word e.g. She is very beautiful etc. Adverb: Describes verb, adjective or another verb and often ends with “Ly” e.g. Quickly, Suddenly etc. Preposition: Words placed before a noun e.g. by, with, while, from etc. Conjunction: Joins words, Phases or Clause e.g. but, and, or, because etc. 18 Interjection: Use to express emotions e.g. wow, oops, alas etc. ii) Grammar Rules Verb 3rd form or Verb1+ing a) is, am, are, was, were (Active voice) verb1+ing will come. b) is, am, are was, were, (Passive voice) verb3 will come. c) has been, have been, had been verb3 or verb1+ing. Has, Have, Had a) After has, have, had verb+ed. “BY” ing form a) if there is a blank after” by” ing form will come. “BY” ed form a) If there is a blank before “by” ed form will come. “To” 1st form a) If there is a blank after “To” 1st form will come. You can download collocations list from PTE Pearson website. iv) Vocabulary Build your vocabulary for solving reading and reading and writing fill in the blanks. Form (2 marks): Write between 50 to 70 keywords. Grammar (2 marks): Do not make grammar mistakes. Spellings (2 marks): 2 points for no spelling mistake. 1 point for 1 spelling mistake. 0 points for more than one spelling mistake. Vocabulary (2 marks): For vocabulary avoids repetitions, short forms like cant, don’t etc. Don’t use abbreviations and slang language. 21 Template (Using the template and adding key ideas and key words in template) “Topic” was the main topic of the lecture. Firstly, the salient aspect mentioned includes 1, 2 and 3 (keywords). Furthermore, the key aspects concerned with “topic” consist of 4, 5 and 6 (Keywords). However, the arguments raised also emphasized on 7, 8 as well as 9 (Keywords). To conclude, he asserted the significance of 10, 11 and 12 (Keywords). 2) Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers (Listening) After listening to a recording answer multiple choice of a question by selecting more than one response. a) Skills Assessed: Listening b) Marking Criteria: 1 mark for 1 correct answer. 2 marks for 2 correct answers. 0 marks for 1 right and one wrong answer. c) Marks Distribution: Marks will go to listening module. After listening to the recording, type the missing word in each gap. Spellings should be correct. Start proper nouns with capital word. If there is a blank after full stop the word in the blank will start with capital letter. Try to write down the spellings on your notepad.
