What similar situations have you experienced or witnessed that are the same as the images presented above? 4. As a student, what are the ways you can think of that will help in solving these issues? Activity 2: Hidden Meanings We will move to another task now that you have practiced examining images and finding common links between them. Think of relevant social problems or issues that can be related to these texts presented in this section. Let’s do this! Directions: Below are lifted lines from songs and poems that hide deeper messages. Find these hidden messages and connect them to relevant social issues or concerns that are evident in our society. Write your answers in your notebook. Refer to the example below. Example: You, with your words like knives And swords and weapons that you use against me You, have knocked me off my feet again, Got me feeling like a nothing You, with your voice like nails On a chalk board, calling me out when I'm wounded You, picking on the weaker man - https://tinyurl.com/ycdvgtbg Mean by Taylor Swift https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYa1eI1hpDE https://tinyurl.com/ycdvgtbg These lines explained how mean words can have an impact to a bullied person. As the famous saying goes, “The tongue has no bones, but it is strong enough to either break or make a man.” It meant that we should be careful in what we say towards other people and even to yourself. 7 These lines represent bullying in a form of saying hurtful things towards another person. This issue is present everywhere – in school, home, and even in social media. Your task starts here: Line #1: She calls out to the man on the street ‘Sir, can you help me? It’s cold and I’ve nowhere to sleep, Is there somewhere you can tell me?’ He walks on, doesn’t look back He pretends he can’t hear her; Starts to whistle as he crosses the street Seems embarrassed to be there. - https://pixabay.com/photos/street-beggar-womanhomeless-2248101/ Phil Collin’s Another Day in Paradise https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qt2mbGP6vFI&feature=youtu.be Line #2: I gave my last job everythin' Before it headed south Took the shoes off of my children's feet Food out of their mouths Yesterday my folks offered to help But they're barely gettin' by themselves - Ronnie Dunn’s Cost of Livin’ https://pixabay.com/photos/human-road-man-maleperson-4482839/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWjkDfRcCus 8 Line #3: A free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wing in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky. https://pixabay.com/photos/sea-seagull-bird-seevogel1993791/ But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing. - https://pixabay.com/photos/animals-birds-cage-petssilhouette-1835337/ Maya Angelou’s Caged Bird https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/48989/caged-bird Line #4: Crowded hallways are the loneliest places For outcasts and rebels Or anyone who just dares to be different And you've been trying for so long To find out where your place is But in their narrow minds https://tinyurl.com/y8xga5oy There's no room for anyone who dares to do something different Oh, but listen for a minute - Invisible by Hunter Hayes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiUqgL5urWc 9 Line #5: Mummy they called me names They wouldn't let me play I'd run home sit and cry almost everyday Hey Jessica you looking like an Alien With green skin you don't fit in this playpen Oh they pulled my hair, they took away my chair I keep it in and pretend that I didn't care https://tinyurl.com/y8m4mabj Hey Jessica, you're so funny, You've got teeth just like Bugs Bunny Oh, so you think you know me now? Do you share the same experiences with the poems and songs above? 2. If yes, how did you overcome challenging experiences? 3. Can you cite and explain another social issue or concern that you have observed in our society that is not discussed above? 12 Good job! It is expected that you will understand the major social issues and problems emerging in today’s society as you go along in this section. There are many social issues or concerns that are evident in today’s society. However, in this section, we will just discuss the four major social issues and concerns for us to understand them better. Refer to the table below. FOUR MAJOR SOCIAL ISSUES AND CONCERNS DISCRIMINATION POVERTY BULLYING SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION Let us first discuss discrimination. But before that, let’s define what discrimination is. In the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, discrimination means the practice of unfairly treating a person or group differently from other people or groups of people. Discrimination The American Psychological Association (APA) also defines discrimination as “the unfair or prejudicial treatment of people and groups based on characteristics such as race, gender, age or sexual orientation.” Source: APA (2019). Discrimination: What it is, and how to cope Everybody can experience discrimination. The reasons could be your race, gender, age, or sexual orientation. People who tend to experience discrimination are most likely prone to mental issues that result in serious health issues. 13 Let’s take a look at the lines we used in the previous activity. Line #4: Crowded hallways are the loneliest places For outcasts and rebels Or anyone who just dares to be different And you've been trying for so long https://tinyurl.com/y8xga5oy To find out where your place is But in their narrow minds There's no room for anyone who dares to do something different Oh, but listen for a minute - Invisible by Hunter Hayes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiUqgL5urWc These lines presented how society can damage a person just because he is “different” than the rest of them. Imagine if this kind of mindset grows into the mind of the people. The damage we can do to each other is terrible. If only we can practice respecting each other. A better world will surely await us. Below are healthy ways in dealing with discrimination, according to the American Psychology Association (as cited in Discrimination: What it is, and how to cope, 2019). Dealing with discrimination Finding healthy ways to deal with discrimination is important for your physical health and your mental well-being. https://unsplash.com/photos/dGqWUPPesrQ Focus on your strengths. Focusing on your core values, beliefs, and perceived strengths can motivate people to succeed and may even buffer the negative effects of bias. 14 https://unsplash.com/photos/vDzeKnPBPLM Seek support systems. Family and friends can remind you of your worth and help you reframe those faulty beliefs you have in yourself. Get involved. You can get involved with like-minded groups and organizations. It helps knowing there are other people who have had similar experiences to yours. Help yourself think clearly. Being the target of discrimination can stir up a lot of strong emotions. They can increase your blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature. Try to check in with your body before reacting. Slow your breathing or use other relaxation exercises to calm your body’s stress response. Then you’ll be able to think more clearly about how you want to respond. Don’t dwell. It might be difficult to shake it off easily when you've encountered discrimination. People sometimes get trapped in these episodes because they're not sure how to cope with those interactions. Researchers have found that stressful events such as these are a major cause of anxiety and depression. In a calmer moment, it might be helpful to talk over the ways you can cope with similar experiences in the future. Try to come up with a plan for how you might respond or what you could do differently next time. Once you’ve determined how to respond, try to leave the incident behind you as you go on with your day. https://unsplash.com/photos/hIgeoQjS_iE Seek professional help. Discrimination is difficult to deal with and is often associated with symptoms of depression. Psychologists are experts in helping people manage symptoms of stress and depression and can help you find healthy ways to cope. Source: https://www.apa.org/topics/discrimination 15 Another social issue that we will discuss is poverty. Poverty Poverty is a state of a person who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions. Poverty is said to exist when people lack the means to satisfy their basic needs. In this context, the identification of poor people first requires a determination of what constitutes basic needs. These may be defined as narrowly as “those necessary for survival” or as broadly as those reflecting the prevailing standard of living in the community (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2018). Poverty is a long-term problem that appears difficult to overcome over the years, with around 17.7 million Filipinos living in poverty, based on the 2018 Official Poverty Statistics. It remains one of the key problems we face, especially the fact that we belong to a third-world nation. Let’s take a look at the lines we used in the previous activity. Line #1: She calls out to the man on the street ‘Sir, can you help me? It’s cold and I’ve nowhere to sleep, Is there somewhere you can tell me?’ He walks on, doesn’t look back He pretends he can’t hear her; Starts to whistle as he crosses the street Seems embarrassed to be there. - https://pixabay.com/photos/street-beggar-womanhomeless-2248101/ Phil Collin’s Another Day in Paradise https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qt2mbGP6vFI&feature=youtu.be These lines present how some people are blessed enough not to be calling out other people for help. If you complain about not having the latest phone you wanted, think again. For other people, having a roof above their heads and can eat three meals a day are the greatest blessings they could ever have. 16 Let’s talk about the third social concern/issue we encounter in today’s generation, which is bullying. Bullying Bullying is an offensive activity involving a real or perceived power imbalance among children or adolescents. There could be serious permanent problems for all children who are bullies and who bully others. (Read more at https://www.stopbullying.gov/bullying/what-is-bullying) Another definition of bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships. This could be through repeated verbal, physical, and/or social behavior that intends to cause harm. It can involve an individual or a group of people misusing their power or perceived power over people who are unable to stop it from happening (National Centre against Bullying, 2020). Bullying is a rampant issue in school common among children and teens. According to the National Education Association, the top reasons why students are bullied include weight, gender, disability, and perceived sexual orientation. With more awareness of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community, bullying based on sexual orientation has dramatically increased over the years. There are types of bullying according to (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, n.d.): Types of Bullying There are three types of bullying: Verbal bullying is saying or writing mean things. Verbal bullying includes: o Teasing o Name-calling o Inappropriate sexual comments o Taunting o Threatening to cause harm 17 https://www.pexels.com/photo/angry-woman-yelling-into-loudspeaker-on-blue-background3978388/ Social bullying is sometimes referred to as relational bullying, which involves hurting someone’s reputation or relationships. Social bullying includes: o Leaving someone out on purpose o Telling other children not to be friends with someone o Spreading rumors about someone o Embarrassing someone in public https://pixabay.com/photos/boy-child-sad-alone-sit-1606222/ Physical bullying involves hurting a person’s body or possessions. Physical bullying includes: o Hitting/kicking/pinching o Spitting o Tripping/pushing o Taking or breaking someone’s things o Making mean or rude hand gestures https://unsplash.com/photos/NPmR0RblyhQ Bullying in any form is not okay; it will have a serious and longterm effect on the bully and the bullied one. It will cause damage to the person’s life without you knowing it. 18 Let’s look at the example text below taken from your previous activity. Line #5: Hey Jessica, you're so funny, You've got teeth just like Bugs Bunny Oh, so you think you know me now? Have you forgotten how, You would make me feel when you drag my spirit down? But thank you for the pain, It made my raise my game, And I'm still rising, I'm still rising, yeah. - https://tinyurl.com/y8m4mabj Look who’s laughing Now by Jessie J. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsxSxF3JKeU This song is about the singer's childhood memories. It shows how bullying can affect a person throughout its life. Good things the pain she felt, she used it as her stepping stone to do better things. Now we are down to the last social issue/concern that we need to discuss – Social Media Addiction. Social Media Addiction Social media addiction can be viewed as one form of internet addiction, where individuals exhibit a compulsion to use social media to excess (Griffiths, 2000; Starcevic, 2013). Individuals with social media addiction are often overly concerned about social media and are driven by an uncontrollable urge to log on to and use social media (Andreassen & Pallesen, 2014). Social media addiction is also described as the compulsive and excessive use of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat). The use of these sites can take over your life and harm your relationships (Team & Off, 2018). Social media addiction is one of the issues that have a high impact on people of all age groups. Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Tiktok, and Zoom 19 are just a handful of the most commonly used applications now. In January 2020 alone, 73 million social media users are Filipinos based on the report of (DataReportal, 2020 January 19). Overuse of social networking sites is more troubling for children and young adults, as their brains and social skills are still growing. Research has shown that young people who often use social media have severely impaired social interaction abilities (Hilliard & Parisii). Below is a table on 10 signs of Social Media Addiction. 10 SIGNS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION 1 2 SOCIAL MEDIA IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO IN THE MORNING. Almost every addict will start their day with a morning routine of checking and pointlessly scrolling through what they have missed on social media after the long hours of sleep at night. YOU WASTE YOUR TIME LOOKING AT NONSENSE AND PROCRASTINATE. Social media is a big cause and also a motivator for procrastination. YOU CHECKED IN EVERYWHERE YOU GO. 3 The youngsters will take out their smartphone to take a picture of their food and post them on social media. They also check in the location before they eat. YOU CHECK NOTIFICATIONS ALL THE TIME. 4 Checking notifications can be a normal thing to do when your phone is buzzing; however, if you are checking it all the time, you may suffer from social media addiction. YOU ONLY WANT TO CONTACT AND TALK TO YOUR FRIENDS VIA SOCIAL MEDIA. 5 If you choose to use social media as the only means of contacting and talking to other people, the sign is clear that you are a social media addict. 20 YOU CONSTANTLY MONITOR THE “LIKES” AND “SHARES” YOU RECEIVE. 6 The reward of getting “likes” from a picture posted on Facebook means a lot to a social media addict. They are a form of acceptance and quickly become a habit in checking who react to your post. CRAVING FOR INTERNET CONNECTION. 7 People who are addicted to social media cannot live without internet, even for a few hours. They feel anxious and choose to be in places with internet connection. YOU TAKE PHOTOS OF ALMOST EVERYTHING. 8 If you are taking photos of everything, from the food you eat, the movie you watch, to constantly taking selfies and sharing them on social media, you should keep an eye on your behavior. SOCIAL MEDIA BECOMES PART OF YOUR LIFE. 9 A clear sign of how social media become part of your life can be seen if you have lost interest in other activities and responsibilities. You choose to scroll your phone instead of going out to exercise. You spend more time on Facebook instead of washing dishes. CHECKING SOCIAL MEDIA IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHENEVER YOU ARE FREE. 10 0 What would you do if you are free? Are you thinking of achieving your dreams? Do you want to exercise? Or do you choose to spend your time on social media? At this point, you start setting aside your productive direction in life, but rather spending it on checking your phone. Read more at https://www.thewisdompost.com/essay/addiction/social-media-addiction/socialmedia-addiction-meaning-symptoms-causes-effects-treatment/1293 You should consider keeping it in moderation if you find these signs apply to you. Studies have shown that individuals who invest too much in social media apps are more vulnerable to poor mental wellbeing and low selfesteem. 21 Don’t worry if you are hooked to these apps right now; there are still things you can do in managing yourself using social media apps (as cited in Team & Off, 2018). Here are the things you can do: STEPS YOU CAN DO TO MANAGE YOURSELF IN USING SOCIAL MEDIA APPLICATIONS Set boundaries around the time when you access your social media accounts. Switch off 'push' reminders, so your use of social media does not affect your daily life. Go for a stroll. To prevent the temptation to check social media last thing at night and first thing in the morning, keep laptops, tablets, and other social media activated devices out of your bedroom. Using social media mindlessly is feeding your addiction; thus, invest some time in walking outside, exercising, reading a book/newspaper, or spending time with your friends. A regular complete digital detox will also ensure you completely disconnect from the internet and social media. Source: https://www.itstimetologoff.com/digital-addiction/social-media-addiction-2/ Too much social media is bad for you. There's more to life than how many likes, shares, and comments you're going to receive. Do not forget to treasure the people around you and build a true friendship with them. This ends our discussion about the four major social issues/concerns that are evident in our society. Always remember that even the smallest act of kindness and respect can go a long way in creating a harmonious society. Let’s start within ourselves and radiate these to others. Imagine what a wonderful world we can have. 22 Let Us Practice Now that you have understood the major social issues and concerns that are evident in our society. Let’s see what you think of those issues/concerns presented. Activity 3: Draw Me a Picture Directions: Draw an editorial cartoon based from the rubric and write a short discussion on its relevance to particular social issues, concerns, or dispositions in real life. Here’s the example: https://arlenepasajecartoons.blogspot.com/2019/01/bulliesviral-virus-of-society.html Based on Arlene Pasaje's editorial cartoon "BULLIES: Viral Virus of the Society," it focuses on the question of how social media can easily expose bullying by sharing it online. There are instances that the images or videos taken are just part of the entire story; indeed, there are pros and cons of this matter. Let’s start with cons: first, an individual is misunderstood based on the uploaded image/video, which effects one's psychological aspect; second, the people around him would also be affected; and third, people will easily judge things, and they can use social media to change things. Furthermore, those who are engaged actively online get informed easily of the possible negative actions of a person. Nevertheless, people who have an empowered voice can articulate the issues on social media. Therefore, the use of social media may have advantages and disadvantages. It will only depend on the intention of the user. Always remember to think before you click. 23 This time, based on what you have learned in this module, choose one social issue that you think is important. Draw your editorial cartoon in the box and write your article about it following the format below.
