NB: You Can Discuss But Have Unique Individual Presentation Of Work!
Question One | 15 marks
Consider two levelling rods placed at a distance of 50m and 100m respectively from the instrument. If the intercepts
observed are 0.488m and 0.980m, determine the stadia interval factors.
Question 2 | 25 marks
A tacheometer was set up at a station A and the readings on a vertically held staff were recorded as given in Table 1.
Table 1

B
Vertical angle
−5°12′
12°
Hair reading
115, 1.195, 1.225
1.030, 1.140, 1.250
Remark
𝑅𝐿𝐡𝑀 = 251.400
Take instrument constants to be 100 and 0.1
Find the horizontal distance AB and the RLB
Question 3 | 20 marks
An EDM sent EM waves of the following frequencies: 1498.5MHz, 149.85MHz, 14.985MHz, 1.4985MHz, 149.85 KHz,
14.985 KHz and 1.4985 KHz and the shift of their phase angles when returned were in decimal degrees as follows:
298.7975, 280.7976, 169.1986, 50.39957, and 11.15991 respectively.
The speed of EM Waves in vacuum is 29, 792, 458 m/s, and the refraction index in air is 1.0003.
a) Find the distance measured
b) Resolve the ambiguity
c) Briefly discuss the principle upon which EDM sends frequencies and relate it to the integer ambiguity.
Question 4| 20 marks
Consider 𝑔1 = −4% intersects 𝑔2 = +3.80% at I of Chainage 52+00 with 𝑅𝐿𝐼 = 1261.50. Design an equal tangent
parabolic curve to meet a railroad crossing which exists at station 53+50 with an elevation of 1271.20 m
Question 5/20 marks
A mine orientation survey is to be done using two mechanical plumb-lines in one vertical shaft. The depth of the oriented
level H = 300 m. The distance between the two plumb-lines is 4m. Steel wires of tensile strength 200 π‘˜π‘”⁄π‘šπ‘š2 are available
for plumbing. The height of the shaft opening to the oriented level h = 5m and the average air velocity in the cross section
of the opening v = 1 m/s. There are no other openings to intermediate levels between the surface and the oriented level.
a) What diameter (d) of the plumb wires and what weight (p) of the plumb bobs would you use for the
orientation purpose?
b) What error of the transferred azimuth would you expect as a result of the air current and spiral shape of the
wires (take the radius of the spiral shape R = 15 cm and use values of d and p as obtained from part (a)).
