GUIDELINES FOR CHEMISTRY I PROJECT
1. FORM a group of 5 – 6 people per group (no more, no less)
2. Choose a suitable TITLE of your Chemistry Project:
a) Making biodegradable plastics from different ratio of tapioca starch.
b) Making biodegradable plastics from different ratio of corn starch.
c) Making biodegradable plastics from different ratio of rice starch.
d) Determination of concentration of acetic acid in different vinegars.
e) Determination of concentration of ascorbic acid in different fruit
juices.
f) Determination of iodine content in different types of salt.
g) Production of voltaic cell from different fruit wastes.
h) Extraction of essential oil from different fruits.
i) Extraction of essential oil from different flowers.
j) Effects of different fruit juices on teeth using egg shell as sample.
k) Effects of different soft drinks on teeth using egg shell as sample.
l) Effects of different types of tea on teeth using egg shell as sample.
m) Production of natural pH indicators from different fruits.
n) Production of natural pH indicators from different vegetables.
o) Others (you may propose a topic to your lecturer).
3. Cut-off date for assignment consultation – ONE WEEK before deadline.
4. Your assignment (20%) will be graded according to:
a) Progress Report (4%)
b) Project proposal (8%)
c) Oral presentation (5%)
d) Classroom Participation (3%)
Weekly progress report (4%) – Group work
1. Outlines the weekly progress (from Week 3 until Week 5) of Chemistry
project.
2. Group members are expected to take the initiative to have group
discussion at least once a week through whichever method they are
comfortable with.
3. Each group needs to complete and submit only one progress report every
week.
4. Progress reports should be typed, Arial, font size 11, with 1.0 spacing.
5. Students are expected to:
i)
Download the weekly progress report template from Moodle.
ii)
Complete them during weekly group discussion.
iii)
Submit the progress report every week, BEFORE Fridays, 12.00pm.
6. Throughout the three weeks, students should plan their Chemistry project
accordingly, from getting a suitable topic to brainstorming the content of
the proposal, as well as organising ideas.
7. ALL discussions (video calls, etc.) have to be carried out in the assigned
Team channels for monitoring purpose.
8. Students can consult course lecturer to discuss or analyse ideas. Please do
not come to course lecturers for content.

Deadline of submission: Every FRIDAYS of the week (Week 3 – 24 Dec
2021, Week 4 – 31 Dec 2021, Week 5 – 7 Jan 2022) BEFORE 12.00pm.
Project Proposal (8%) – Group work
1. In a group of 5 – 6 people, choose a topic.
2. Produce a project proposal (6 – 10 pages) using the project proposal
template given.
3. The project paper should contain the necessary information as stated in
the template.
4. Students may include diagrams or simplify information using suitable tools.
5. The project proposal must contain valid references with name of author
and year of publication.
6. Students can consult course lecturer to discuss or analyse ideas. Please do
not come to course lecturer for content.
7. Cut-off date for consultation – 7 Jan 2022 (Friday).
8. Lecturer will not check your draft – only outline.
9. The project paper must be typed using font type Arial, font size 12, with 1.0
spacing.

Please submit your project proposal (PDF format), and attach together
with the full Turnitin percentage plagiarism report (PDF format).

Deadline of submission: 14 Jan 2021 (Friday) BEFORE 12.00pm.
Oral Presentation (5%) – Group & individual work
1. Summarise your project proposal into an interesting 10 minutes live
presentation.
2. Your presentation should contain the following:
a) Research background
b) Problem statement
c) Objective(s)
d) Methodology
e) Expected outcome
f) List of important references
3. All team members must present their part.
4. The prepared slides for the presentation must be submitted before the
presentation.
5. Submission method: Moodle submission box
6. Slides submission deadline: 27 Feb 2022 (Sunday) BEFORE 11.59pm.
7. Oral presentation will be conducted on the last week of lecture (Week 12).
8. Please refer to Moodle for the rubrics.
Classroom participation (3%) – Individual work
Students will be individually assessed by the course lecturer for 12 weeks
according to the rubrics provided. Please refer to Moodle for the rubrics.
