Evely is primary two pupil. Her academic results are not good. Every time she needed to do
revision, she spent much effort, but did not gain any improvement in her results. Her parents are
both at work for money for them to live. Long working hours keeps them away from helping
Evely. Although they wanted to help her, they could not. In such an environment, Evely is not
happy.
Jolly , her neighbour, heard about the poor situation of Evely when talking to her. Jolly is a
secondary school student. She deals with her work quickly, making her have plenty of free time.
“Besides wasting my time sitting on the sofa, I should do something meaningful. Apart from
combining my puzzles again and again, why not gain some experience? I can help Evely, I will
go for a try!” She thought. Then, she left her sofa, opened the door, in full of confidence, and
went to Evely’s flat. She went in, right to the end of the corridor. She asked Evely’s mum for
permission to tutor Evely in her academics. Her mother nodded, Evely left home, Jolly took
Evely to her flat and started teaching.
They started working. Evely is quite efficient in doing her homework, but there was a lack of
accuracy. Jolly just explained what she did wrong and also gave solutions. Once they started,
they sat still on their chair for hours, doing Evely’s homework. At first, Evely goes well with her
progress. However, over time, Evely begins to slow down. She began to complete the exercise
using a longer time. She was too tired, like a water bottle which has reached its capacity, and
cannot be filled anymore. It’s now time for Evely to go home, so Jolly gave her the lecture notes
of the remaining homework to maximise her study time at home for better outcomes. Despite
three hours of mouthwater-spitting speech, Jolly ended up feeling satisfied and energetic, in
contrast, Evely ended up feeling exhausted. After this rewarding experience, Jolly discovers she
enjoys being with children and she would be interested in a teaching career.
After three months of tutoring, Evely now learnt to think quicker and no longer needs Jolly’s
help.
It’s time for Jolly to have a public exam. Jolly thought of Evely and her pursuit of wanting to
become a teacher. With her goal in mind, she tried her best to reach her dream that she worked
hard for it. Jolly also did the best, being the champion of the exam. Evely did well too. Her
school form rank elevated from the last, improved 80 ranks to the 40th of the form. Her mum
and dad do not need to be worried about her studies. They went to the office every day without
Evely’s problems in mind.
Soon, it is Evely’s end-term ceremony. Evely’s story of suffering hard in doing her revision was
impressive. She was invited to share her experiences on the school stage. As the public exam
champion, Jolly was also invited as a guest lecturer. She recalled her time with Evely and the
importance of helping others. She said, “Helping others makes me happy- just like every time I
saw Evely’s smile. Never say never to doing good deeds. Don’t be timid to help ones in need. If
everyone helps each other, then everyone will be supported. Imagine if everyone just cared
about themselves, what will it be like the next time you seek help?” both of their touching
speeches inspired many people to the charity donation box. Many $100 and $500 were put
inside- the power of helping others will lasts and continue to benefit more people
