What is Economic and Environmental
Sustainability? How is it measured?
The issue of economic and environmental sustainability revolves around attempting to find a
balance between economic and societal growth, and the long-term preservation of the
environment. This complex problem is often discussed today due to its significance, as the
decisions we make today can potentially harm the future generations. An example of a statistical
measure of preserving the environment is the Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI), as it
scores and ranks countries based off their environmental performance. This
