Drug name Brand Name: ROUTE, DOSAGE, FREQUENCY Route: oral Vastarel Dosage: Generic Name: 35 mg Trimetazidine Therapeutic Class: Cardiac Preparation Pharmacologic Class: Antiemetic Agents; Antihistamines, 1st Generation; Antihistamines, Piperazine Derivatives. Frequency: One tablet twice daily, that is once in the morning and once in the evening, during meals. MECHANISM OF ACTION Helps the heart muscle to switch from using energy from fat to using energy from glucose, helping the heart muscle to consume less oxygen and energy, preventing angina pectoris. INDICATION, CONTRAINDICATION, ADVERSE EFFECTS Indication: Trimetazidine is indicated in adults as add-on therapy for the symptomatic treatment of patients with stable angina pectoris who are inadequately controlled by or intolerant to first-line antianginal therapies. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Trimetazidine or to any of the other ingredients of Trimetazidine (Vastarel MR). Parkinson disease, parkinsonian symptoms, tremors, restless leg syndrome, and other related movement disorders. Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30ml/min). Adverse effects: As with all medicines, Trimetazidine (Vastarel MR) is likely to have side effects, although not everyone may be prone to them. NURSING RESPONSIBILITY Assess for hypersensitivity to trimetazidine, with heart failure and pregnancy Administer drug after patient has eaten with a full glass of water Encourage patient to continue efforts at smoking cessation Provide safety measures if lethargy occurs
