Pre-sessional Course Listening and Speaking Module 1 Today we will…. – the “weighting” of the marks – the aims of the Speaking and Listening course – An overview of the Assessments – Structure of the timetable 2 Listening and Speaking (L&S) • This part of the course is divided into 2 disciplines: Listening = 50% of L&S marks Speaking = 50% of L&S marks 3 1. Listening module Aims of the Pre-sessional Listening module • To improve your ability to understand general and academic English • To enable you to understand lectures more easily • To improve your ability to take notes in English • To enable you to listen to each other in group discussions more easily 4 Recorded lectures and talks • Aim: to give you authentic practice in listening to a variety of lectures and talks • Must watch before the Live class on Monday morning • You will be asked to do work before and/or after each lecture • The Lectures and talks will help to prepare for your degree programme and develop listening strategies 5 Overview of Listening Assessments You will have 2 listening assessments: LISTENING Assessments Listening Task 1: Formative Listening Task 2: Summative (100% of final mark) 6 What is the Listening Assessment like? Part One: • You will watch a video of a talk or lecture and take notes. You can listen as many times as you like. Part Two: a few days later • You will take part in a short discussion with 2-3 other students to discuss questions and issues related to the talk or lecture. 7 2. Aims of Pre-sessional Speaking module • To help you prepare and deliver effective academic presentations • To help you prepare and participate in discussions • To help you identify ways to improve your pronunciation • To help you to communicate confidently with Tutors and fellow students, both face to face and online. 8 Overview of Speaking Assessments You will have 2 listening assessments: SpeakingAssessments Speaking Task 1: Formative Individual 6 minute presentation. Speaking Task 2: Summative (100% of final mark) Individual 10 minute presentation. 9 Assessments: Keywords Formative assessment (F): • a practice assessment (which does NOT affect your final mark) • you will receive a score (in %) • you will also get feedback outlining ways to improve in future Summative assessment (S): • a ‘real’ assessment • the result is part of your final mark 10 Marking criteria • Marking criteria help tutors to decide your ability in different aspects of both listening and presentation skills • The marking criteria will be available on Blackboard https://blackboard.soton.ac.uk) • We will discuss this further during class. 11 Tutorials • Very important • Each student to get a 10 minute tutorial in pairs/small groups • Tutors to arrange tutorials with students (day and time) Blackboard • All learning tasks will be available each week on Blackboard. • PPT videos and follow up practice tasks released at the end of the week. Participation Even though you will not be assessed on your participation, you are expected to: • attend all classes • be punctual • fully engage in all learning tasks • submit work on time 14 Finally….
