ART APPRECIATION REVIEWER (MIDTERM) Artist is an art practitioner such as painter, sculptor, choreographer dancer, musician, a poet who produces or creates indirectly functional arts with aesthetic value using imagination. Artisan is a craftsman, such as carpenter, carver, plumber, blacksmith, weaver embroider and etc. who produces directly functional and/or decorative arts. KEY COMPONENTS ON THE ART MARKET : The art market is an economic ecosystem that relies not only on supply and demand but also on the fabrication of a work’s predicted future monetary and/ or cultural value. The following are important players in the market: CURATOR A curator, who is a manager or overseer, or keeper of a cultural heritage institution (e.g. gallery, museum, library, or archive), is a content specialist charged with an institution’s collections, selecting art to be displayed in a museum, organizing art exhibitions in galleries or public places, researching artists, and writing catalogs and involved with the interpretation of heritage. ART BUYER An art buyer is a professional who is knowledgeable in art, or who may look for an art and buy it on behalf of a collector or company ART DEALER An art dealer is a person or a company that buys and sells works of art. Art dealers often study the history of art before starting their careers. They have to understand the business side of the art world. They keep up with the trends in the market and are knowledgeable about the style of art that people want to buy. THE 3 STAGES IN THE CREATIVE PROCESS : ROBERT FRITZ, based on his book enumerated the steps in the creative process, and said that creating is a skill that can be learned and developed. Like any other skill, we learn by practice and hands-on experience – we can learn to create by creating. 1. GERMINATION (IDEA) It is the initial moment when you conceive a new project in your life. 2. ASSIMILATION During this phase you will internalize and assimilate or incorporate the idea you want to create. 3. COMPLETION Completion is the time to finish your project, to give in the final shape before you present it to the audience. MEDIUM AND TECHNIQUES: Mediums is the mode of expression in which the concept, idea or message is conveyed. These are the materials which are used by an artist to interpret his feelings or thoughts. Technique is the manner in which artist controls his medium to achieve the desired effect. It has something to do with way he manipulates his mediums to express his idea. Visual Arts - are those mediums that can be seen and which occupy space. Examples of visual arts are paintings, drawings, photography and sculpture. His talent is also seen in his mastery of scale and space as his structures stand out and at the same time augment the environment. Throughout his illustrious career, Locsin had designed and built almost 200 structures that range from residences, churches, public institutions, hotels and an airport. His largest work is the Istana Nurul Iman, the palace of the Sultan of Brunei. 10. JUAN F. Nakpil (1899 -1986) was a Filipino architect teacher and a community leader. In 1973, he was named one of the National Artists for architecture, and tapped as the Dean of Filipino Architects. He was one of eight children of the Philippine Revolution veterans Julio Nakpil and Gregoria de Jesus (who married the former after the death of her first husband Andrés Bonifacio). Among Nakpil's works are San Carlos Seminary, Geronimo de los Reyes Building, Magsaysay Building, Rizal Theater, Capitol Theater, Manila Jockey Club, Rufino Building, Philippine Village Hotel, University of the Philippines Administration and University Library and the Rizal Shrine in Calamba, Laguna. He also designed the International Eucharistic Congress Altar and improved the Ouiapo Church in 1930 by erecting dome and second belfry. He was hailed as National Artist for Literature in 1973.
