Welding is a process of joining two similar metal pieces by heating to a fluid state (melting), with or without filler material or pressure. For someone to do the task, he/she must have tools. In this lesson you are going to familiarize yourself with the basic hand tools used in welding. Learning Outcome 1- Identify and select materials and tools To get started with your welding, you must have a set of at least basic equipment and tools and here’s a list of the basic welding hand tools and their uses. Welding hand tools are grouped into four categories 1. 2. 3. 4. Measuring tools Cutting tools Driving tools and Holding tools 1. Measuring Tools Tool Description Pull-push rule- used to measure curved, irregular surfaces Steel rule-simplest and most common measuring tools. Try square- used for measuring or testing the squareness of a metal work. Combination Square- used for multiple purposes in metalworking, combined with 45º, 90º and a protractor. 4 Micrometer caliper- is used to take very precise measurement of dimension in thousandths of an inch. Vernier Caliper- is a measuring instrument which can make inside, outside, or depth measurements Dividers- used for measuring or setting of distances, and to lay out arcs and circles. Steel Tape- used for accurate measurement of distance. 2. Cutting Tools Tool Description Hacksaw- is a tooth cutting tool mainly made for cutting metal. Files- used to remove fine amounts of material and smoothing rough edges on the metal surface. a. Mill File- used for filing and finishing brass and bronze. b. Flat File- most used files for general work c. Square file- is intended for filing square or rectangular holes d. Round File- used primarily for enlarging holes. e. Half-round file- used for filing curved or concave surfaces. f. Triangular file- used for filing surfaces that meet at least 90º 5 Cold chisel- used to remove, cut, and chip metals. a. Flat chisel- is used for chipping flat surfaces; cutting off rivets or metal fasteners, thin sheets, and small bars; and for general purposes b. Cape chisel- is suited for cutting narrow grooves or slots-. c. Diamond point chisel- to cut Vgrooves. d. Round nose chisel- used for cutting round and semi-circular grooves. Scraper- used to scrape metal from a surface Punches- are used for permanent marking on the surface of metal. 3. Driving Tools Tool Description Hammers a. Ballpeen hammer- used for straightening bending and deforming metals Chipping Hammer- used to remove welding slag from a weld and welding spatter from alongside welds. 6 Wrench- is used for loosening and tightening light and heavy nuts and bolts. a. Adjustable wrench/Pipe Wrenchhas a movable jaw which makes it adjustable to various sizes of nuts. b. Oxy-acetylene wrench- used for tightening hose and fitting connection on oxy-acetylene unit. c. open-ended wrench- is one that is made to fit one size of nut or bolt d. close-end wrench- is similar to a single ended wrench, but as it entirely encloses a nut, e. socket wrench- is a tool with a usually interchangeable socket to fit over a nut or bolt. Screwdriver- is used for loosening and tightening screws. a. Philipps b. Flattened c. Helical-ratchet 4. Holding Tools Tool Description Clamps- used to set up your work piece, so the welding will produce a tight joint. a. Tool maker clamp- used for holding small parts both at the bench and at the machine. b. C-clamp- is an all-purpose clamp that is generally used for all kinds of work. Metal Vises- used for holding metal in place. a. Drill vise- is a sturdy steel vise with movable jaw that easily goes back or forth by raising the handle. 7 b. Most government offices use uniform requisition slip, while others have their own. In school shops, teachers are creative enough to devise their own form to suit their local need. Such practice of using requisition slip promotes proper monitoring of supplies, materials, tools, and performance and accomplishment of required service or services among others. Here are some examples of requisition forms according to their purpose. A. Requisition Slip Name of School: _____________________________________ Address: _____________________________________________ Requisition Slip Name of Project: _____________________________________ Purpose: _____________________________________________ Balance on Hand Quantity Materials and Description 8 Unit Price Date: _____________ Group: ___________ Total Requested by: Approved by: _______________________ Student’s Name _______________________ Shop Teacher _______________________ Foreman The following are the terminologies found in a requisition form: 1. Name of Project indicates the task in which the materials will be used. b. Example: Repair of School Lavatory 2. Balance On Hand indicates the quantity and unit of materials still available in the stockroom 3. Requisition Quantity and Unit is a number and units of materials requested 4. Unit write the unit of measuring quantity 5. Material/Description write the name of material and description or specification 6. Unit Price is a price of material per piece or per unit 7. Total is a unit price X Quantity (ex. 3 pc x P30 = P90.00) 8. Borrower is a name and signature of the person requesting tools and materials. 9. Tool Keeper is the one who is responsible to take care the of the tool room. 10. Job Order is workings sheet that server as a complete guide of the student to a certain task to be done. 11. Foreman is a person responsible in the overall operation of the worker in the workplace. Borrower’s Slip This form is used for borrowing materials, tools, equipment. Its use promotes proper monitoring of inventories. It has numerous purposes and outweighs disadvantages. This form is devised according to the need of the office or accountable officer. Adopting this system necessitates observing certain rules and penalties for violators. B. Borrower’s Slip Borrower’s Slip Date: _____________ Item No. No. of Pc Name and Description of Tools 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 9 Remarks 7. 8. 9. 10. Approved by: _______________________ Tool Keeper _______________________ Borrower _______________________ Foreman _______________________ Shop Teacher REQUISITION PROCEDURE In making a request for materials and tools needed, the following Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) should be followed: 1. List down the materials and tools needed as per job requirement. 2. Check for the availability of the needed materials and tools in the stockroom. 3. Accomplish a requisition form 4. Let the shop teacher check the requisition form. 5. Submit the requisition form to the material officer 6. Unavailable requested materials and tools should be substituted without sacrificing the cost and quality of work 7. The material officer will prepare the requested material for issuance to the student. Acquire and Inspect Materials/Tools It is important to inspect and check materials and tools for defects and damage before receiving them so that you can ask for replacements for those that you found defective. 1. Check if the materials and tools are complete in terms of quantity and specification (number of pieces, length, width, etc.) 2. Check the physical condition of tools, (check tools against the specification, quantity, and quality,) see to it that parts are complete, cutting edges or tooth free from damages, 3. Check the accessories of each material and tool. See to it that nothing is missing. 4. If any of the materials or tools is found missing or defective, report it immediately to the supply officer or teacher. 5. Get a replacement for the materials and tools found defective. 6. Sign the requisition form as you receive materials and tools. 7. Store the received materials and tools in a safe area or storeroom nearest your workplace. (store materials, in proper order, bulky and heavier materials at the bottom lighter and smaller items on top of the pile) 8. Always handle the materials and tools carefully. (avoid dropping the tools on the floor, do not expose tools and materials on sunlight or rains) 10 What’s More Independent Activity 1 In the puzzle below, you must identify at least ten tools used in welding. Encircle the words that may be arranged vertically, horizontally, and even diagonally. Write your answer on a separate sheet or in your notebook.
