Problem Set # 1
Direction: Solve the following problem in a short bond paper. Write the problem and solution in
engineering lettering with a 1x1 invisible margin—no need for the front page. Just put the name
on the first page. Box your final answer for each question in the nearest four decimal places
1. The admittance of a network is (0.05– j0.08) S. Determine the values of resistance and
reactance in the circuit if they are connected (a) in series (b) in parallel.
2. A 50 microfarad is connected in series with a coil having 50 ohms’ resistance and 150 mH
inductance. The source voltage is 100 sin(wt-30 degrees) V. What is the maximum power?
3. The network shown in Figure 1 has a total active power of 2253W. Determine (a) the total
impedance, (b) the supply current, (c) the apparent power, (d) the reactive power, (e) the
circuit power factor, (f) the capacitance of the capacitor to be connected in parallel with
the network to improve the power factor to 0.90 lagging, if the supply frequency is 50 Hz.
4. For the network shown in figure, use mesh-current analysis and nodal analysis to
determine the magnitude of the current in the (4+ j3) Ohms impedance.
5. Use superposition theorem and Kirchhoff’s circuit analysis to determine currents I1, I2
and I3 for the network shown in Figure below.
