designated serial sizes of universal beams, columns and
bearing piles can be calculated from the sectional areas
given in tables 5 to 7.
This British Standard specifier the dimensions, tolerances
and certain properties of the following hot-rolled
structural steel sections.
3.4 Derived properties. The derived properties in
tables 5 to 12 are conversions from the imperial values
and are provided for information. Direct calculation of
derived properties from the nominal dimensions may
give slightly different results.

the basis that steel has a density of 7850 kg/m³.

4. Mass and length tolerances for all sections
4.1 Mass. Tolerances shall be applied to the actual mass
Channels
2. Designation
per unit length of the section.
A section is designated by the serial size (nominal size)
in millimetres and the mass per unit length in kilograms
per metre.
The rolling tolerances shall be either:
(a) ± 2% % of the actual mass per unit length; or
(b) +5 % of the actual mass per unit length where a
minimum mass per unit length is required.
This form of designation shall be used in any enquiry
and order.
4.2 Length. Sections ordered as ‘specified’ or as ‘exact’
lengths shall be supplied as follows.
Examples
(a) A beam of 920.5 mm × 420.5 mm at 388 kg/m
shall be designated 914 × 419 × 388 beam.
(a) 'Specified' lengths. When a section is to be cut to a
specified length, it shall be cut to within ± 25 mm of
that length. When a minimum length is specified.
it shall be cut to within +50, -0 mm of that minimum
length.
(b) A rolled tee of 50.8 mm × 50.8 mm at 6.92 kg/m
shall be designated 51 × 51 × 6.92 rolled tee.
3. Basis of calculation
lb) 'Exact' length When a section is to be cut to an
‘exact’ length, it shall be cold sawn to within ± 3.2 mm
of that length.
3.1 Designated dimensions. The designated dimensions
given in tables 5 to 12 have been convened from the
imperial values using 25.4 mm = 1 in.
3.2 Designated mass. The designated masses per metre
run for universal beams, columns and bearing piles given
in tables 5 to 7 have been converted from the imperial
masses per metre run and rounded to whole numbers.

Foreword
This fifth revision of this British Standard has been
prepared under the direction of the Iron and Steel
Standards Committee, and is based mainly on
BS 4 : Part 1 : 1972.
In recent years international agreements have resulted in
certain types of structural steel sections being produced
in metric ranges instead of the former imperial ranges.
Such metric sections have been standardized in BS 4848.
the following Parts of which have so far been published:
Part 2. Structural hollow sections
Part 4. Equal and unequal angles
Part 5. Bulb flats.
Pending international agreement and subsequent
consideration by the British Standards Institution.
all other types of section are still being produced on
an imperial dimensional basis although designated in
equivalent metric terms.
This new edition of BS 4 : Part 1 updates the
standardization of such sections taking into account the
Progress in publishing the above Parts of BS 4848,
certain deletions in production ranges and minor
modifications to flange shape in universal beams.
In the latter respect it should be noted that all universal
beams have been produced with parallel flanges since
January 1978, with properties as shown in this standard
Properties of universal beams with tapered flanges
produced prior to January 1978 were included in
BS 4 : Part 1 : 1972.
The opportunity has also been taken to correct minor
errors in the data published in the 1972 edition.

5. Dimensional rolling tolerances for universal
beams, columns and bearing piles
Table 1 (b). Tolerances on flange width for
universal beams, columns and bearing piles
5.1 Cross section. The variations from the specified
dimensions and the correct cross section shall not
exceed those shown in figure 1 and tables 1 and 2.
Serial size width
5.2 Straightness. The variations from straightness shall
not exceed those given in table 3.
5.3 Thickness. The variations from the nominal thickness
of web and flanges shall nor exceed the tolerances given
in table 1 (c).
For sections 457 × 152.406 × 140. 305 × 102 and
254 × 102. the tolerances on flange thickness in table 1 (c)
shall apply only when the flange width B is greater than
or equal to the designated width. Where the flange width
is less than the designated width, the flange thickness T
shall not be reduced by more than 10 % of the nominal
flange thickness.
