Tentree is a clothing company started in Canada by Kalen Emsley, David Luba, and Derrick Emsley. They started in 2012 in a garage and are today a widely known company. All of their items are environmentally conscious. Each of their products are made from sustainable materials including recycled polyester, tencel (a wood pulp fiber), organic cotton, and hemp. Tentree’s biggest mission with their brand is to plant trees. With each item purchased, they plant ten trees. These trees are planted around the globe. They currently plant trees in over ten countries, and hope to make that number grow even larger to include more countries. In 2014, they reached their first goal of planting one million trees. They are currently on track to have one billion trees planted by 2030, which will create a huge impact. The owners of this company want to help the environment and help reduce climate change and do so by not only making their products sustainable, but by also planting more trees. When one purchases an item from their website, it comes with a unique code that is specific to their ten trees in which one can track their trees and see where they are being planted. The trees are guaranteed planted within six months of purchase. Planting these trees has an even bigger impact than on the environment, however. They hire local people to plant these trees. Some of these people in underdeveloped countries have never had a cash-paying job, and this allows them to become members of the upper-middle class of their communities. This company interests me because the clothes are affordable and comfortable and they are made with the environment in mind. I often cannot do as much as I would like to help the environment or buy environmentally conscious products due to high prices, but they make it affordable to do so. It’s interesting how they budget to make an income, pay their employees associated with the actual business, and pay for the trees to be planted. It shows how strategic they are from a business perspective.
