P.E.E. Practice Sound of Thunder

P.E.E. Practice
• Learning Intentions: How to use the P.E.E.
System effectively.
• Success criteria: You will have written a
paragraph of your own, demonstrating how the
P.E.E. system works.
• Purpose of lesson: This lesson will help you to
write the main paragraphs of your Critical Essay.
Things you will need
• A copy of “A
Sound of
Thunder” by Ray
Bradbury
• Pen
• Paper
• Your imagination!
Task: Explain how time travel affects the plot,
characters, and ending of a short story.
P = Point
Choose a point of discussion from the task.
Remember to choose a point that you are familiar and
comfortable with, and you know you can discuss it in
some depth. For example, how time travel affects the
plot.
E = Evidence
Write down the quotation that you want to use
as evidence/an example, and remember to use
“quotation marks”.
Remember that the evidence you choose should
support your chosen point of discussion from
the previous slide.
E= Explain:
Explain how the quotation supports your chosen
point.
Example
• Point: How time travel affects the plot.
• Evidence:
“Thank God Keith won.”
• Explain:
This suggests that the election results supported
a free and democratic society. However, the
reader later discovers that the slightest change
in history causes ripples throughout the years
and turns into a tsunami of suffering that affects
the plot directly.
Example paragraph:
• The plot of the story is hugely affected by time
travel as Eckels says, “Thank God Keith won.”
This suggests that the election results
supported a free and democratic society.
However, the reader later discovers that the
slightest change in history causes ripples
throughout the years and turns into a tsunami
of suffering that affects the plot directly.
How many quotations?
• For each paragraph, you should aim to have at
least two quotations from the text and discuss
each one.
• The length of the paragraph depends on how
well you analyse each quotation.
Writing a paragraph:
• Your writing must be formal.
For example, do not use contractions such as,
“don’t, can’t and wouldn’t.” You should say, “do
not, cannot and would not.”
• Watch your spelling. If you do not know how to
spell a word, use a dictionary.
Write a Paragraph
• Using the P.E.E. system, write your own
paragraph using at least two quotations from
the text to support your point.
• You can break each section down into bullet
points then write a complete paragraph once
you have completed each part of P.E.E.
• Learning Intentions: How to use the P.E.E.
System effectively.
• Success criteria: You will have written a
paragraph of your own, demonstrating how
the P.E.E. system works.
