The word under consideration in this report is “wavy”. Wavy is defined as being cool and chill with respect to reasonable situations. To a degree this word is indeed versatile in the sense that it could be used colloquially when addressing peers and comrades. For example, my response to roommate not having done the dishes from last night’s party would be “that not wavy of you bro”. In this context, it would mean that it was not cool for him to not have done the dishes after last night’s party. I intentionally used the term in passing with a friend a few days ago to gauge his reaction. We were discussing whether he was prepared for his upcoming midterm exams to which he replied “no”. I asked him if it was because he had not alotted enough time to do the necessary studying to which he agreed. My response was “that not wavy bro, you have to study ahead of time to have a chance at your exams”. His reaction was that of laughter as he stopped me repeating what I had just said as if he must have incorrectly heard it. His laughter did not bring me disappointment in the sense that he did not catch on immediately; it instead made me realize that slang or metaphors used abundantly overtime, tend to inscribe themselves in individual’s vernacular. I will say that it common that people fail to catch onto things instantly. That is not to say that eventually novel terms become household names. Consequently, my friends and I have consistently been using the term to describe essentially everything we talk about. Notably, there is another aspect to the word that I think many new words also contain, and that is the idea of expressiveness. Word and terms convey certain meaning that express certain feelings or emotions, but wavy is multifaceted in nature. Wavy can be used as denoting something as cool or awesome or denoting something as reasonable and correct. The multifaceted nature of the word is what in my opinion attracts others to use it so frivolously. When a friend of mine asked how I came up with the word, I earnestly told him that I was not sure of I was the words originator but nevertheless I sought to connect my feelings of waves in the ocean to that of expressive emotions or through metaphors. When you think of a wave do you not think of calm and serenity?
