Skills • Text analysis (finding main argument, supporting ideas, author’s attitude & tone, purpose, inference) • Summary writing • APA style of referencing (making in-text citation,paraphrasing, direct and indirect quotations) • Response paper writing (reacting to a text) 5 Content The underlying causes and impacts of contemporary global issues United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) which aspire to achieve a sustainable future. 6 A WORD ON ATTENDANCE • Attendance is not compulsory and students do not fail the course if they don’t attend the classes. However; – Students who attend classes by 50% and over are entitled to get a Class Participation Grade (CPG) of 10 pts based on the criteria provided. No attendance, No CPG! – Students are not admitted to class after 10 mins. Please do not interrupt the lesson! 7 Now let’s have a look at the assessment map! Come to the Zoom class on time (Late comers are kindly asked not to attend that specific Zoom lesson until the next hour.) 2. Make sure you turn on microphone and/or camera when your instructor asks you a question. 3. Let the instructor know if you have to leave the Zoom class via chat box. 4. Make sure you have the relevant documents and webpages on your laptop and be ready to answer any question and/or complete any task. 5. Check your whatsapp, facebook, text messages on your mobile phones!during the breaks. 6. Make sure you attend the online classes, participate in the activities rather than turning your microphone and camera off and do something else. 7. If you need to eat something, have it before the class. 9 Some Tips to be successful! • About attendance: – regularly join online sessions (missing one class may be costly since you have to work harder to catch up!) • About articles: – read the article assigned that week – learn the meaning of new words – do some background research about the topic, author and concepts or other authors cited – find out about the places, events, years, names. 10 • • About the course material: • Always have the course materials (Skills Books and the articles) ready before the class as you can easily take notes on them. Mobile phones do not help much. Pen/pencil still counts! During the class: • Ask your teacher questions whenever you do not understand something or you want it to be explained/clarified. • Express yourself appropriately and voice your ideas whether you agree or disagree (different voices are always good to hear!) • Sign up for tutorials from your instructor in case you have a problem (academic or non-academic) thru LMS or E-mail (this will help you & your instructor to better understand each other!) 11 WISH YOU A WONDERFUL AND A SUCCESSFUL SEMESTER! 12
