Karyotype Karyotyping is a method of determining the number and types of chromosomes with an individual Most karyotyping is done at the fetus stage, where amniotic fluid or fetal cells from the chorionic villi are used as the tissue sample (see page 215 fig. 7.36) Once isolated the condensed chromosomes are isolated and photographed. A karyotype diagram is then devised from the photograph based on physical size of the chromosomes.
