GOVERNMENT SPENDING ON ROADS AND TRANSPORT
The chart demonstrates the proportion of expenditure by government on infrastructure in Italia,
Portugal, the UK and the USA in every five years from 1995 to 2005.
Overall, it is clear that, Portugal spent the highest governmental spending on roads and transport, while
this figure in UK was the lowest. Notably, the amount of money spending on this category in the USA
saw an upward trend, the opposite was true for other countries.
In 1990, Portugal spent about 27% government budget on roads and transport, followed by 22% of this
in Italia. After that, the former saw a downward trend, it decreased to 20% in 2005, whereas the latter
showed a fluctuation. It reached a peak at 23% in 2000 then turned down to 19% in 2005.
Turning to others countries, in 1990, the UK invested about 10% governmental money on infrastructure,
while the proportion of this in the USA was 11%. Both countries reduced spending on this category in
1995. At the final year of this survey, the figure in the UK dropped to 8%, while it raised to 15% in USA
