COASTERS AND MINIBULKERS // WEEK 41
The small-tonnage shipping market remains excited in almost all regions. The most acute shortage of open ships is seen in
the Black and Mediterranean Seas. Charterers face huge problems finding vessels for longhaul shipments, particularly to the
Continent, as owners want to get sky-high rates discussing long duration deals, fearing to miss another round of rate growth.
Skyrocketing prices for fertilizers, coal and some minerals add confidence to owners. Rates are supported also by a further upturn
in bunker prices (another $20-30/t up this week). As a result, shorthaul transportation costs have risen by $0.5-1.5/t in both
basins, midhaul rates by $1.5-3/t, longhaul ones by about $10/t. Estimated TCEs for sea-going vessels of about 5k dwt have
already exceeded $9k daily bss RV, while owners of 11-12k dwt fleet already earn $14-14.5k daily on average (sometimes RVs
with 2 laden legs can even bring $18-20k daily).
Following a three-week decline, sea-river rates have also started to grow in the Azov Sea. Despite still weak exports of wheat
from Russian shallow ports, weather conditions made adjustments. Thus, draft normalization allowed many loaded vessels to
leave the Azov Sea on time, thereby creating a positional shortage of ships for mid-Oct. As a result, freight rates have pushed
off from the bottom ($2-4/t up over the week).
Coaster owners continue to strengthen positions in North Europe. Given brisk cargo traffic, rates on most routes have added
another €1-3/t this week. Similar to South Europe, rates for shipments of 3-4,000 t stems and 6-8,000 t cargo lots are now
increasingly voiced at same levels.

There are so far no preconditions for a slowdown on the freight market. Demand for fertilizers, minerals and construction cargoes
remains healthy in MENA countries and Europe, while shipments of Ukrainian and European corn keep gaining pace. Only the
demand for Russian coils has weakened (primarily in Turkey), but this fact will hardly allow charterers to lower freights. At their
best, they will manage to stabilize rates. The situation is not so simple on the Azov sea-river market given still weak demand for
Russian wheat in Turkey, while steadily growing duties restrain exporters’ activity. Therefore, the current rate growth may turn
out to be very short-term. However, we can hardly expect a noticeable rate downturn as sea-river owners have an excellent option
of working from seaports.
