Should Jamaica become a republic? According to the United Nations article, Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean and the largest English-speaking Island in the Caribbean Sea. I highly recommend that it is time for my beautiful country, Jamaica, to become a republic country. The oxford dictionary defines republic as a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch. I do believe the country is ready for a change to become republic as this will help strengthen the economy and uplift the people. It represents a symbol of our independence and sovereignty. As a nation we will be no longer tied to the British Monarchy and would be able to make our own decisions about the future as Jamaicans. Prior to the pandemic Jamaica has successfully stabilized the economy, turing a fiscal deficit of 11 percent of Gross Domestic Product (G.D.P.) in 2009 into a 1 percent surplus in 2019 and reducing public debt from 142 percent of G.D.P. in 2009 to 94 percent by 2019. To become a republic would help strengthen our own head of state, who would represent us home and abroad. To become a republic we need Economic Benefits, because we as Jamaican's would no longer have to pay for upkeep of the British Monarchy, and we would be able to forge new trade relationship and partnerships with other countries. In concluding, According to this new letter from Ryan Reddie,JP he wrote an article in the Jamaican gleaner stated that. The decisin to become a republic should be made by the people of Jamaica, through a referendum. The pen in the hands of the people is as powerful as ink is to paper, and we have on the opportunity to make our voices heard on this important issue. If the people of Jamaica made thair voies be haerd Jamaica would be better now, because we would make our own decisions, help strengthen our national identity and pride and have our own haed of state.
