Peer Researcher
Role Description
+ About this project
The Trust for Developing Communities (TDC) will support a small team of peer researchers to interview
young people aged 11-19 on their experiences of unfairness, injustice, exclusion. There will also be the
opportunity for peer researchers to creative visual, audio or digital content to represent what young
people have to say. Brighton and Hove City Council have funded this project, and the findings from the
research will be shared with the council in order to make Brighton and Hove a fairer city for young
people.
There are a number of organisations involved with this project, providing training on interviewing and
research skills, and the skills needed to create the visual, audio or digital content. The training, research
and content creation will all take place this summer and early autumn.
+ Is the project for me?
We are looking for 5 peer researchers that are aged between 14 - 25, who will work as team to interview
other young people aged 11-19. We are keen to recruit people from ethnically & culturally diverse
communities.
You will be able to commit to 2 hours a week from July to October and be motivated to capture the
voices of other young people across the city, with potential for extra time working on the project, agreed
by you. You will be able to choose whether you want to take part purely as a peer researcher, or if you
want to get involved in the creative side as well.
After this project, you will also have the chance to get involved with other TDC or Platform B initiatives
or we could link you into other cool projects, if you are up for it!
+ What you'll be doing?
The exact nature of the tasks are to be decided by the peer researchers, however participants will
definitely need to have the following qualities:
Be willing and able to interview other young people.
Be able to speak about other people's experiences.
Keen to improve things in the lives of young people in our city.
Be non-judgemental and friendly.
Be committed and reliable.
Keen to learn new skills and get involved!
It will also be helpful if you have some lived experience of unfairness, are from an ethnically diverse
background or have been involved in projects similar to this before.
+ What you'll get
Skill in peer and community research, as well as transferrable life skills, such as teamwork,
communication, critical thinking etc.
The opportunity to create content with prominent young people’s radio station, Platform B.
A boost to your CV, and a reference for future job applications.
To share yours and your peers voices with the council, and influence positive changes for young
people in Brighton.
To meet new people and engage in fun activities.
Project support from a qualified trauma therapist and expert researcher.
Amazon vouchers as a thank you for participating.
Not done content creation before? That’s fine, you are welcome to step back for this part, or dip your
toes in.
After this project, you will also have the chance to get involved with other TDC or Platform B work, if
you are up for it!
