HowTo : Classify VMs by site, based on their names
Let’s assume VM name pattern is like ST1-VMName
Site coded on 3 first digits
We want to dynamically populate our sites to
monitor or build dashboards for each one of them
ST1  Production Site 1
ST2  Production Site 2
Other  All other sites
Let’s see how to create a REGeXP in business view
1. On Business View :
Configuration / Categories / Add
Add a new category « SITE », Dynamic
type, Based on Virtual machines
2. Configuration / Groups / SITE
(the group you just created)
Add a new Grouping expression
3. Create the REGEXP
Double clic on the
logical expression
to get a patern
Highlight the « value » and
doubleclick on the « substring »
method
Highlight the « value »
and doubleclick on the
« Name » Object
property
Now add all cases, Carriage return for
comprehension and you get it
You can test your REGEXP
against real life objects !!!
4. Use your new category
Wait a few minutes,
and find it in VEEAM
Monitor Business
View
Wait for the next (or
manually trigger)
collection, and your
category is available
to build reports
Refer to vCenter guide, or
VmWare KB #1005720
You can use vSphere custom
attributes in conjunction with
VEEAM Business view REGEXP
for near infinite possibilities

No patience for
downtime and data loss
