Lesson 1: Definition on the Concept
of Journalism and Journalist
What is Journalism?
 The practice of investigating and reporting
events, issues and trends to the mass
audiences of print, broadcast
and online media.
 News—or journalism– is only one part of what is called media.
 Journalism is not the movies, book publishing, public relations,
corporate communications, television sitcoms, radio talk shows,
websites (except newspaper websites), or any other sub divisions of
mass communication.

At the elementary level, journalism is still best defined
as the process of reporting and writing the news and
packaging it for an audience. Whatever the technology,
news is information that must be collected and presented
to a consumer.
Where can we find the news?

Principles of Journalism
 Journalism’s first obligation is to tell the truth.
• Its’ first loyalty is to citizens.
• Its’ practitioners must maintain an independence from those they
cover.
• It must serve as an independent monitor of power.
• It must provide a setting for public criticism and compromise.
• It must strive to make the significant interest relevant.
• It must keep the news complete and relative.
• Its practitioners must be allowed to exercise their personal
conscience.
Who is the Journalist?
A journalist is any person who writes for newspapers,
magazines, or news websites. They can also be any
person who prepares news to be broadcast in radio,
television or the social media. They can also be

what we talk about as individuals and address as a nation.
Why become a Journalist?
People enter journalism for many reasons but, money apart, there are
four main motives:

Journalists are making their living from writing. Novelists choose
journalism as a way of earning a living and developing their writing
skills.
2. The Desire to be Known
Most people want their work to be recognized by others. Some want to
become a household name and be respected by what they do.
3. The Desire to Influence for Good
Some people enter journalism for the power it will give them to
influence people. In many countries, a large number of politicians
have backgrounds as journalists.
4. The Desire for Knowledge
Lots of young men and women enter the profession with the desire to
know more about the world about them without needing to specialize
