CONTEXT AND RATIONALE Sports is highly important in a person's life since it keep them fit, healthy, and strong. It is really important at every stage of life. It also enhances people's personalities. By participating in sports on a regular basis, we keep all of our organs active and improve our hearts. Among the modern sports of today’s generation, volleyball is one of them. It is a team sports consisting of 2 teams with 6 players each to play in the court. Volleyball can boost your overall health by helping to circulate more blood, oxygen, and nutrients into your body, as well as increasing your energy levels. Improved hand-eye coordination and quick reflexes are also achievable. As part of the curriculum, volleyball can be a good way of fulfilling the objectives of every physical education class and also improve motor qualities and skills of the students. Based on the K to 12 Senior High School Core Curriculum – Physical Education and Health May 2016, Physical Education and Health offers experiential learning for learners to adopt an active life for fitness and lifelong health. The knowledge, skills and understanding which include physical and health literacy competencies support them in accessing, synthesizing and evaluating information; making informed decisions; enhancing and advocating their own as well as others’ fitness and health. This course on exercise for fitness enables the learner to set goals, monitor one’s participation in aerobic and muscleand bone-strengthening activities and constantly evaluate how well one has integrated this into one’s personal lifestyle. It consists of an array of offerings which learners can choose from. However, in Takepan High School, teaching the basic skills in volleyball is a concern due to the limited skills and resources of the teacher to demonstrate it properly. Thus, this study is proposed to rationalize the effectiveness of peer assisted learning strategy in learning the basic skills in volleyball. Subsequently, this will help fellow teachers to use this as teaching strategy to develop better learning. II. Action Research Questions Republika ng Pilipinas Kagawaran ng Edukasyon Region XII Schools Division Office of Cotabato This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of peer assisted learning strategy in developing the basic skills in volleyball among grade 11- TVL students of Takepan High School. Specifically, this action research aims to answer the following research questions; 1. What is the level of performance of the basic skills in volleyball among Grade 11TVL students of Takepan High School? 2. What is the level of students’ demonstration on the basic skills in volleyball among Grade 11- TVL students of Takepan High School after the intervention? 3. Is there a significant difference in the performance level before and after the demonstration of basic skills in volleyball among grade 11- TVL students of Takepan High School? 4. How does the intervention help the student’s learning? Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy The proposed intervention of this study is peer assisted learning strategy wherein selected varsity athletes will help in teaching the basic skills in volleyball. Hott and Walker (2012), states that peer tutoring is a flexible, peer-mediated strategy that involves students serving as academic tutors and tutees. Typically, a higher performing student is paired with a lower performing student to review critical academic or behavioral concepts. Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS): PALS, a version of the Class wide peer tutoring (CWPT) model, involves a teacher pairing students who need additional instruction or help with a peer who can assist (Hott and Walker, 2012). Pre and post assessment will be conducted using rubrics to measure the performance and demonstration level of the students on the basic skills of volleyball. In general, a performance-based assessment measures students' ability to apply the skills and knowledge learned from a unit or units of study. Typically, the task challenges students to use their higher-order thinking skills to create a product or complete a process (Hilliard, 2015). Participants The respondents of the study are Grade 11 - TVL students School Year 2021 – 2022 of Takepan High School, Takepan, Pikit, Cotabato. b. Data Gathering Methods This study will use checklist guided by a rubric as a supplemental material to rate the level of their performance. The researcher will submit an action research proposal to the District Research committee for its approval. After the approval of the action research by the District Research committee, the subject teacher will develop the checklist with the rubrics to be evaluated by the school head, and validated by the Municipal Research Committee. If the checklist passed based on the evaluation of the school principal and the District research committee, it will be used for the conduct of the study. After which, the researchers will follow these 3 steps in collecting the data of the study: Step 1: To determine the level of performance on the basic skills in volleyball of the students, the researcher will give pre – assessment activity using the constructed checklist. The will perform the skills in volleyball. The student’s performance will be rated using a rubric. Step 2: The researcher will contact schools’ varsity athletes to be the peer tutors of the respondents. They will be divided into groups and assigned 1 tutor per group. They will be given ten (10) days for tutoring and practice. Step 3: To evaluate their performance, post – assessment will be conducted. The respondents will again perform the basic skills in volleyball and to be rated using the same checklist. c. Data Analysis Plan This study will be using mixed method (qualitative and quantitative) in analyzing the results. To determine the effectiveness of peer assisted learning strategy, basic skills will be rated from 0-4 points where, 0 means no skills level, 1 for basic skills level, 2 Republika ng Pilipinas Kagawaran ng Edukasyon Region XII Schools Division Office of Cotabato for intermediate skills level, 3 for advanced skill level and 4 for excellent skill level. The level of the respondent’s performance must fall at least on the intermediate level to agree that the intervention was effective. IV.
