8S+ Monday Work NOTES SECTION: Please write your notes from the video class here Style: Thankful Pleased Refreshed Light-hearted Nostalgic Empowered Trustful Relived Grateful Harmonious Contemplative CLASSWORK: My favorite artist is Leonardo da Vinci. His style is severe. He is outstanding in many different fields like mathematics, engineering, science, and anatomy. He has very accurate records of the various areas that he studies in, and it’s almost the same by now. It was the best one at that time. Also, there is a story about him drawing eggs. It shows that he practiced very hard to improve his skills in drawing and sketching. He can do it very carefully and persistently. His serious personality allows him to treat everything seriously. I am trying to learn from him, and I am conscientious while finding information in the text or solving math problems. He has more to learn from, but I think this style contributes the most to his success. HOMEWORK: Close read: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader 1. How would you describe the structure of the author’s sentences? The sentences’ structure is subtle that it’s diverse and carefully constructed. The author uses ‘There be’ sentence with the excellent rhetoric skill to depict how substantial and splendid the feast is. Besides, the flexible use of various post-positive attributes and adjective phrases to describe different things on the table, for example, ‘pies shaped like ships’ and ‘gleaming salmon’ is subtle, which made the sentences neat and diverse. 2. One element of Lewis’s style is his use of imagery. Two examples have been boxed. Find three more examples. ‘under full sail or like dragons and elephants’ ‘flagons of gold and silver and curiously-wrought glass’ ‘the smell of the fruit and the wine blew toward them like a promise of all happiness.’ 8S+ Monday Work 3. What is the most striking stylistic difference between how the two authors describe a meal? Support your answer. The first one is conversational, causal and humorous, but the second one is formal, descriptive and carefully structured. The former one describes the family meal with humorous conversation and sarcasm, for example : “It wouldn’t have been so much for love of dog, but for survival.” which depicted how awful the meal is. Turn to Lewis, it’s quite different that his language is like a beautiful and dedicate blanket with various patterns on. Bird 4. What words and phrases in the boxed lines help you to understand the boy’s feelings about helping Mrs. Pritchard? The sentence ‘I wouldn’t have done it for anybody else’ shows how special this means to him and we can infer from that the boy was willing to do so. ‘I didn’t tell her...for nothing’ ‘I’m easy that way’ These words depict the boy’s mental activities accurately that he enjoys helping her for no reply. 5. A A Girl named Zippy 6. Examine the boxed words. Are these words you would typically associate with doing good deeds? Explain. Definitely not. ‘stalk’ and ‘victim’ are often associated with terrible behaviors and awful things. ‘stalk’ is to illegally follow and watch someone over a long period of time, in a way that is annoying or frightening. It’s creative and ironical to describe good deeds. 7. Identify three details that help you understand Kimmel’s feelings about helping Agnes Johnson. ‘I’d hit the jackpot’ ”I could probably avoid doing and more good deeds …” “She was older than dirt” These details illustrate that she definitely unwilling to do so. 8. What world if you use to describe the author’s tone, or attitude, toward doing good deeds? i would use reluctant, unworthy and terrible to describe her attitude toward doing good deeds. 8S+ Monday Work Class Tasks and Homework: Please complete your answers to any tasks you were asked to do in the video today, including journals, tasks from the .pdf or other homework.
