Example Sentence
Some of the comments that will be given on EMLS 102R students’ drafts will be useful for the grammar
test that is set for the day before Reading Week begins. (complex = subordination with two adjective
clauses + one adverb clause)
1. Compound
Every one of the students in EMLS 102R is planning to eat well throughout Reading Week, and each one
of them intends to sleep well too. (IC; in fact, IC. = a compound sentence)
2. complex
Much gaming will be indulged in by University of Waterloo students because they will be relaxing every
single day of Reading Week. (IC + because DC. = a complex sentence)
3. simple
Little equipment at the Physical Activities Centre (PAC) will be used during Reading Week. (IC. = a simple
sentence)
4. compound-complex
A large amount of patience will have been exercised by University of Waterloo (UW) students by the end
of Reading Week as many of them will have been missing attending classes, and they will have been
bored by not following their busy university schedule. (IC + as DC, and IC. = a compound-complex
sentence)
