Sapiens 1. Why is there just a single species in the human family? (1 mark) This is because it is thought that the other human species were overpowered and killed by hominids. 2. What made Homo Sapiens distinct from other human species – in other words, what constitutes the Cognitive Revolution? (3 marks) Homo sapiens are able to think in a different way than other human species. Humans were now able to think in concepts. 3. How have theorists explained the distinctiveness of human language? (4 marks) Human language is far more complex than other languages or forms of communication in animals. For example, and some animals can communicate that they see a lion or a tiger but they cannot say directions where as humans can give exact descriptions about what they want and see. 4. How did the Cognitive Revolution change the nature and structure of human society? (2 marks) Humans were able to become more cooperative with each other forming groups and families which increased their chances of survival now that everyone can be helped and help the group 5. What is the critical threshold for human organizations, and what is meant by this term, and why or how have humans been able to overcome this threshold, leading into the formation of the modern corporation and/or state? (4 marks) The critical threshold for human organizations is the maximum natural size of a group of humans that can cooperate with only forming intimate connections. After crossing 150 people in a group, there is a need for smaller teams to be made to take care of different aspects instead of one person controlling the entire tribe. 6. Is Harari correct to argue that “… there are no gods in the universe, no nations, no human rights, no laws, and no justice outside the common imagination of human beings.” (2 marks) Yes, because all of those things are concepts meant to bring ease into living and have no actual purpose outside of that as well as no footing in real life. Gods were created so people could find a purpose into living a hard and painful life, laws were made so people thought of the world as fair and just but it is the opposite. 7. How have human beings been living in a dual reality? (2 marks) 8. Why would a Neanderthal be sure to defeat a Sapien one-on-one physical battle, but not stand a chance if each side were paired into large groups? (2 marks) The reason a Neanderthal would win in a one on one fight is because of pure strength but they would lose in grouped battles because sapiens can organize themselves better and have plans of attack which gives them an upper hand. 1|Page 20 marks ___________________________________________________________________________________ Criteria for Success and Evaluation * A successful assignment will: a. demonstrate an awareness of the different aspects of the anthropological approach (cultural difference, evolution, norms and values) b. develop a thorough and detailed list of the cultural differences between the Marine Corps and other branches of the Armed Forces. c. develop a thorough and detailed list of how the Marine Corps has evolved over time, including when it was first formed, and its most important battles, as well as how it has adapted . d. develop a thorough and detailed list of the norms and values of the Marine Corps. e. communicate information in a clear and a well articulated manner.
