Name: ______________________________________________ Date: _________________________ Chemistry – Element Speed Dating Profile Assignment Background Like people, some elements on the periodic table are more compatible with each other than others. An element’s properties determine which other elements it is most likely to react with. Your task is to create a snapshot of your element’s “personality.” Use the space below to create a creative (and legible) profile of your assigned element. You will be introducing your element to your classmates in a future activity to determine “compatibility” between elements. Resources: Wikipedia is a great source of background information about your element! For a more interactive resource, visit this interactive periodic table and click on your assigned element to learn more about it, including unique facts. Element Assigned to Me: __________________________ Profile Requirements Use ONE PAGE of space to create your element’s profile, including each of the requirements described below. Clearly label each of the five sections below on your profile. Make sure your profile is colorful and legible (text is neat AND large enough to reasonably read!) Use the entire page of space. You can include pictures that illustrate parts of the profile if you’d like. 1. Profile picture – anthropomorphize your element. This can be a fancy stick figure drawing, an element symbol with arms and legs, or something more artistic. Your element’s profile picture should reflect one or more of your element’s defining properties (color, durability, reactivity, etc.) Make sure your element’s symbol on the periodic table is prominently featured as part of the profile picture (shirt or hat featuring the symbol?) 2. Personality – include some details here about how your element “behaves.” Is it reactive or unreactive? Does it have properties of a metal, nonmetal, or a metalloid? At what temperature will your element melt? At what temperature will your element boil? 3. Friends Circle – who does your element like to associate with? – Include one or two notable molecules or compounds containing your element 4. “Where you can find me” – Location on the periodic table AND where the element is found in nature 5. Occupation – What are one or two human uses of your element? Are there any known problems with your element in terms of human safety/health?
