Classical architecture offers a treasury of timeless
precedents, much like this Japanese traditional
home, which invites you to contemplate the
artistry of a classical garden.
While modern architecture
can be striking, it often lacks
the resilience of classical
design, leaving many
structures to face early
demolition due to their
inflexibility and inability to
adapt over time.
Introduction

every aspiration
S
lassical architecture, an art
form rooted in the wisdom
of the ages, draws its
strength from time-tested principles, embracing the essence of
both bygone eras and modern
triumphs. It is a discipline that
takes inspiration from revered
voices of Europe (Vitruvius,
Palladio, Vignola, etc.), China (the
Yingzao Fashi), and India (the
Vaastu literatures) - and even
C
contemporary landmarks that
have successfully stood the test
of time. Rather than chasing
fleeting trends, it reveres the
enduring, crafting spaces and
structures that transcend generations. This devotion to the 'best
of the best' yields designs of
unparalleled grace and timelessness, flexibly adapting to
changing needs. It's this rare
quality that sets classical and
traditional architecture apart,
offering longevity that contrasts
starkly with the disposable nature
of many modern constructions. At
Ihsan Hassan Architect, our
unique blend of classical traditions from Europe, Southeast
Asia, India, the Islamic world, and
China empowers us to fashion an
architectural masterpiece for you
—one that marries elegance and
permanence, destined to be
cherished by generations to come
Traditional and classical architecture
lasts for generations because it is
adaptable and flexible as evidenced by
this adaptive re-use of an old Malay
house in Temple Tree Resort in
Langkawi, Malaysia.
This curated ensemble of lovingly restored classical
Malay houses at the renowned Terrapuri resort in
Terengganu, Malaysia, stands as a testament to the
enduring legacy of classical architecture, showcasing
how these time-honored structures continue to grace
generations with their timeless charm.
The Embassy of Portugal in
Bangkok stands as a captivating
embodiment of classical
architecture, symbolizing the
harmonious fusion of diverse
cultures and histories, where
timeless design bridges the past
and the present.

House No. 3A
Private Residence (2023)
Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam
Malaysia
Schematic design stage
A multi-generational courtyard house which
consists of three different family units, each with
its own building. The design is based on the
traditional Chinese courtyard house (四合院,
sìhéyuàn) but is adapted to the Western classical
proportions. The window detail is a traditional
Sino-Dutch design, simplified for modern
prefabrication with ‘raw’ timber finish. A common
hall for family events faces the main street. Its
verandah is designed in the style of Melbournian
Victorian architecture. The clients expressed their
desire for simplicity and elegance. The house is a
narrative on the history of the family and
intended to be their residence for generations.
Kacapuri
Private Residence (2023)
Sungai Pasir, Sungai Petani
Malaysia
Schematic design stage
Located in a 2-acre rice field in the outskirts of
Sungai Petani town, this house is based on the
local variant of the Anglo-Indian bungalow. It is a
blend of Western Classical architecture with
Malay roof and window details. The layout is an
adaptation of Palladio’s vision of a perfect villa.
Townhouse
Terrace house renovation (2023)
Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia
Schematic design stage
This is a transformation of an intermediate 90’s
terrace house unit into an urban town house.
Located in the suburb of Kuala Lumpur, the
house is owned by an art collector-couple who
would like to remove the typical terrace car
porch and create a gathering space in front of
the house. The faux-balcony on the upper level,
born out of site constraints, provides shade and
sits on a pared-down neoclassicist ground floor.
The windows are adorned with carvings by a
well-known master craftsman from Terengganu,
Malaysia.
Tunku Muhammad Sa’ad Memorial
Mausoleum (2023)
Kuala Muda
Malaysia
Schematic design stage
A pavillion built for the grave of Tunku
Muhammad Sa’ad, who led an independence
movement called Perang Musuh Bisik against
Thailand in the late 1890s in Kedah, Malaysia.
The building is commissioned by a local
historical society dedicated to the memory of the
forgotten national hero.
Townhouse
Terrace house renovation (2023)
Subang Jaya
Malaysia
Conceptual design
This early sketch commissioned by the secondgeneration owner of an intermediate terrace
house unit built in the 1980’s in Subang Jaya,
Malaysia. The clients requested a facade
renovation and minor changes to the existing
layout. A simple verandah based on Victorian
terrace houses is adapted with locally available
materials and skills.
